Keitele offers a range of ways to spend your stay: Ystävyyden Elämyspuisto brings together play and exercise activities, the Puupolku trail explores themes of wood and forests, and an AR tour takes you through the history of the area. There is also public art and natural attractions nearby. You can choose between active pursuits, local stories and trails in nature.
Play and exercise at Ystävyyden Elämyspuisto
Ystävyyden Elämyspuisto in Keitele has a nine-hole miniature golf course. The skate park offers facilities for skateboarders, scooter riders, inline skaters and BMX riders. There is a separate children’s play area with a giant trampoline and a zip line, as well as an outdoor fitness area. The activities offer different options: miniature golf and a play area alongside a skate park for several sports and an area for outdoor exercise.
Wood themes and local history along digital trails
Puupolku is an outdoor walking trail through the built-up area of Keitele. Its digital content covers wood, forests, forestry jobs and the environment. Some stops have postboxes with paper-based activities, including activities for younger children. The trail thus combines digital themes with activities that can also be explored without looking at a screen.
Keiteleen Kylänraitti offers a different perspective on Keitele: this mobile AR tour runs along Äyräpääntie and explores the past, present and future of the area. Information boards at the stops explain how to use the digital content. You can use a smartphone and the Salmi-AR app for the tour. The two activities therefore have different focuses: Puupolku centres on wood and the environment, while Kylänraitti focuses on Keitele’s development.
Art and archaeological heritage
Rajakivi is a protected archaeological monument in Pappilanranta, on the shore of Lake Nilakka. It is located in the waterfront park at Äyräpääntie 8–9. Community art stones are located in Keitele’s market square and in a nearby park. They were created in 2019, the municipality’s 140th anniversary year. Ystävyydenpuisto is also home to “Tarinakehä”, a collaborative work by Iida Eija Tilles, created in 2024. It was produced as part of the Kyläraittien taidemuseo project.
Shoreline and nature trails nearby
Lossisaari, with a sandy beach and a diving tower, is in the area around Keitele. The diving platforms are one and three metres high. A nature and walking trail on Lossisaari is suitable for relaxing walks, taking in the scenery and jogging. The 1.7-kilometre nature trail there has barbecue huts, shelters, campfire sites and fishing spots along the shore. Lossisaari’s café-restaurant and fuel sales serve boaters.
Hetejärvi is a protected bird habitat about six kilometres from the centre of Keitele. It can be reached by bicycle through rural landscapes; part of the route follows a road through a peatland area. If you’d like to include other trails nearby, the Leppäselkä outdoor trail offers a different distance: it is 4.7 kilometres long and has a shelter with a campfire site.
A seasonal difference between the trails
Leppäselkä also has well-maintained cross-country ski trails in winter. They can be reached from the outdoor trail’s car park or by taking a longer route from the sports ground in Keitele’s built-up area. So, as well as nature and walking trails described for year-round use, there are also ski trails as a seasonal option. The distances and access points given can help you choose a route that suits your interests and preferred distance.
