The local heritage museum, the street in the church village and the rural landscapes each offer a different perspective on Lavia. The museum brings together regional traditions and a type of rock named after the town; the church village features a well-preserved street layout and historic buildings. Lakeshores, fields and forests shape the area’s natural attractions. The range of discoveries therefore spans local history and regional culture, as well as hiking and scenic views.
Local Heritage Museum: Regional Culture and Lavialite
Lavia’s local heritage museum showcases life, traditions and craftsmanship in the region. Its exhibits range from everyday life to skills passed down through generations. A rock and mineral collection donated by Antti Kamppi adds a geological theme. It includes a sample of Lavialite, a rock named after Lavia. At the museum, you can move between the region’s social and craft traditions and a specific example of local geology.
Historic Street in the Church Village
In the church village, a tree-lined street runs parallel to Lake Lavijärvi, along the upper edge of the lakeside fields. Its historic layout is well preserved, so the area’s historic character comes not just from individual buildings but from the street itself. The street’s route also connects it to the lake and the lakeside fields.
Along the street stand a 1823 Greek-cross church with a west tower and a vicarage dating from the 1870s. There are also well-preserved farmsteads and houses once occupied by officials. “Greek-cross” refers to a cross-shaped plan with arms of equal length; “west tower” describes the location of the church tower. The church’s architectural form and orientation can thus be distinguished. The former crofter areas of Konimäki and Kaivopuisto are also located along the street, adding another historical facet to the built environment.
Shorelines, Hills and Bridges
Among Lavia’s striking rural landscapes are the shores of Lake Lavijärvi and Velhonnokka, as well as Huuhkajavuori. Fields and forests are also part of this landscape. Huuhkajanvuori has hiking terrain, and its summit offers an impressive view of Lake Lavijärvi.
The stone bridges offer their own distinctive features. From the imposing Myllykylä stone bridge, you can watch the Myllykoski rapids rushing beneath it. Rare vegetation, including knotgrass, grows near the Sampakoski stone bridge. The two sites differ in their natural attractions: at Myllykylä, the focus is on the view of the watercourse; at Sampakoski, it is on the plant life near the bridge.
