A natural activity near Nørre Rubjerg is walking through the sand to Rubjerg Knude. The area offers various options: a suggested walk through the dune landscape, a path near Grønne Rende, the Rubjerg coastal dune plantation, and the history of the church and lighthouse. When planning, the specific routes and their respective features are of particular interest.
On foot at Rubjerg Knude
The suggested walk is 4–5 kilometres long and can be strenuous because of the sand. It starts at the car park by the lighthouse and heads south along the dune ridge. The return route follows the North Sea Trail through the Rubjerg coastal dune plantation back to the car park. This way, the route combines a section along the dune ridge with a return through the plantation; its length and sandy terrain are specific features of this walk.
Near Grønne Rende, a wheelchair-accessible path leads inland through the sea buckthorn. This is a different route profile: the walk is described in terms of its length and the possible effort required because of the sand, while the path near Grønne Rende is described as wheelchair-accessible. Each detail applies to the specific route.
Landscape and nature
The highest part of Rubjerg Knude is just under 100 metres above sea level. The upper area consists of a layer of windblown sand about 40 metres thick, which continues to grow. These details describe both the height of the elevation and the structure of its upper layer. At least seven orchid species find suitable growing conditions in the Rubjerg coastal dune plantation. Bird migration in spring and autumn is also a sight to see. The plant habitat and seasonal bird migration offer different points of interest for nature lovers.
Church history near Rubjerg
After several centuries of drifting sand, the old church of Rubjerg was dismantled in 1904 and moved several kilometres inland. The new church was built using materials from the old one; its Romanesque baptismal font was also reused. The old churchyard of Rubjerg preserves remains of a demolished medieval church and funerary monuments. Together, these sites trace a path from medieval remains and funerary monuments to the later relocation of the church and the reuse of its materials. Drifting sand is an important part of the church's recorded history.
Lighthouse and exhibition
At Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse, an internal staircase allows visitors to climb to the top of the lighthouse. The 14 m² exhibition container is also located at the car park by the lighthouse. It provides an overview of Rubjerg Knude and the history of the lighthouse: from the landscape's formation by Ice Age glaciers to its construction in 1900 and its spectacular move 70 metres inland. The exhibition brings together natural and architectural history, while climbing the lighthouse offers a different way to experience the building.
