Lønstrup Beach is a sandy beach with good swimming conditions for children and adults. Its groynes create calm, shallow lagoons, and there are also good opportunities for beach fishing. The beach is also a winter bathing spot: water samples are taken there even outside the bathing season, so winter bathers can monitor water quality year-round. Swimming, beach fishing and winter bathing therefore offer different ways to enjoy a visit to the beach.

Coastal landscape and nature

Lønstrup Klint stretches for about 13 kilometres from Harrerenden north of Lønstrup to Furreby north of Løkken. Rubjerg Knude and Lønstrup Klint are listed as a Natura 2000 site in Hjørring Municipality. The Rubjerg Klitplantage area near Lønstrup is also known for several orchid species, including hollandsk hullæbe and ægbladet fliglæbe. So, as well as the beach, the cliffs and plant life are also natural attractions to consider during a stay; the orchids are specifically found in the area around the town.

Walking routes and getting your bearings

Those heading to Rubjerg Knude Fyr along the Nordsøstien pass through Lønstrup. The section of the Nordsøstien that runs through Hjørring Municipality is part of the North Sea Trail. Lønstrup also has four Kløverstier walking routes, all of which start at the Lønstrup Turistbureau. This means there is a route leading to Rubjerg Knude Fyr, as well as four routes with a shared starting point—different reference points for planning your own walk, without a set walking time.

The Lønstrup Tourist Office is in the centre of town and offers brochures, inspiration and maps all year round. If you want to choose routes for your stay or find your bearings, you can find these materials there regardless of the season. To get to Rubjerg Knude, follow the signs to Fyrvejen in Lønstrup from exit 5 near Vrå.

Local history and maritime traces

Bækslugten in Lønstrup was formed by a natural disaster on 11 August 1877. The ravine became 50 metres wide and 15 metres high, splitting Lønstrup in two. The signal mast is also a landmark in the town. It was formerly used to warn fishermen at sea of storms; its historical function connects local history with seafaring.

Lønstrup Church was inaugurated in 1928, and its tower reached its full height in 1939. The church contains an old Romanesque granite font from Mårup Church, which holds a German baptismal font dating from 1575. The church’s inauguration, tower and font offer different points in time to explore: its history in the 20th century, as well as the older font and the baptismal font dated to 1575.

Crafts and galleries

The open workshops of Lønstrup’s craftspeople give visitors the opportunity to follow the creation process up close. In several galleries, visitors can watch artists at work and talk with them about art. Workshops and galleries therefore offer two specific ways to explore crafts: seeing how things are made and talking about art.

One notable example is Dorte Visby’s open ceramics studio and gallery. It is located in a 200-year-old barn at Mårupgård. Keramoda is also associated with a change in use: over the past 40 years, the old Strandvogtergård has developed from a farm into an artists’ community. Keramoda also hosts a series of courses and events. Together, these places offer different ways to explore workshops, galleries and the local cultural development during a stay.
