Hjørring offers a range of discoveries: one trail follows the watercourse through the city, another climbs into the Hjørring Bjerge; art and medieval architectural history offer further points of interest. Christiansgave is Hjørring’s oldest city park. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the character of each trail and the cultural themes to be found in the city.

City trails between the watercourse and Hjørring Bjerge

The blue Kløversti follows Hjørring’s watercourse from the city centre, along the new winding stream, through the Folkeparkruten route and on to the rainwater basins at Bejts Vænge. Folkeparkruten is a 2.0-kilometre walking trail with a paved surface; the trail is lit during the hours of darkness.

The red Kløversti Hjertestien leads uphill from the centre through Hjørring Bjerge and passes through protected meadowland and dry grassland. Its route is therefore markedly different from the blue Kløversti’s watercourse. All four existing Kløverstier begin and end at Springvandspladsen. From Bellevue udsigtstårn, the view stretches across Hjørring Bjerge, the city of Hjørring and the North Sea. There is a car park, as well as tables and benches.

Art and sculptures in Hjørring

Vendsyssel Kunstmuseum is located in the heart of Hjørring in a former cloth factory. It has a collection of modern Danish art from 1945 to the present day, including painting, sculpture, applied arts and graphic art. The collection focuses on art and artists connected to Vendsyssel. Its time span and regional focus give a clear thematic framework to a visit to the museum.

More than 150 sculptures are spread throughout the city. The sculpture trail leads to a selection of these works in Hjørring, offering a distinct way to explore art in the urban landscape. The two perspectives differ: at the art museum, the focus is on the collection and its connection to Vendsyssel, while the trail takes visitors to a selection of sculptures around the city.

Medieval churches and city history

Provstegården is Hjørring’s oldest estate. The medieval churches of Skt. Olai, Skt. Hans and Sct. Catharinæ are Hjørring’s oldest surviving buildings. Sct. Catharinæ Kirke is a late-Romanesque brick church in the inner city. It is the youngest of the three medieval churches and also the city’s main church. These two qualities make it a distinct landmark in Hjørring’s church history.

Vendsyssel Historiske Museum offers a guided tour of Hjørring’s medieval churches. The tour explores visible architectural details and their significance as sources for the medieval history of Hjørring. The tour can be booked; availability may vary. Check the dates in advance. From 10 August to 22 December, the museum is open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check seasonal opening hours before your trip, as they may change.
