Østervrå offers several distinct starting points for a stay: the architectural and art history of Østervrå Church, the history of PixlArt, cycling connections, a nature-rich woodland path and far-reaching views across the landscape. When planning, it is worth choosing your focus first. Specific dates of origin help with the cultural topics; outdoor activities are distinguished by their respective descriptions of cycling routes, an MTB loop and a nature-rich path.

Church art and photographic art

Østervrå Church was built in 1900 in the Neo-Romanesque style, based on plans by architect Frits Uldall. In 1996, artist Arne Lundsteen Hansen created a new altar design and the ceiling decoration featuring the work “VEJENE”. This brings together two clearly dated layers in one building: the architectural history around 1900 and a later artistic design. The dates help distinguish between them: 1900 marks the construction of the church, while 1996 marks the new altar design and ceiling decoration.

PixlArt is also part of Østervrå’s art history. The institution opened in 2015 in a converted church in the town. Its concept presents photographic art with the help of new technology; this includes digital images by Danish and international artists displayed on large screens. Alongside the church architecture, this adds a distinct connection to photography and digital image presentation.

Cycling and walking routes with different profiles

At Hærvejspladsen Østervrå, a 5 km nature-rich path runs through the local biodiversity forest. The MTB loop in Østervrå is just under 5 km long. The lengths are therefore similar, but the descriptions emphasize different things: one path leads through the biodiversity forest, while the other is explicitly identified as an MTB loop.

There are also two specific route connections for cycling plans. The regional cycling route Tannisbugtruten runs from Østervrå to Skiveren; in Østervrå, it connects to the Hærvejen cycling route. This gives you both a named destination and a route connection. Check the current route before setting off, as infrastructure can change.

Landscape and historic routes

On the final stretch to Østervrå, the route crosses a large, open plateau with wide views over the Midtvendsyssel landscape. This is where an old fjord arm, called Volstrupsletten, comes to an end. The view and the history of the fjord arm go together here: you can appreciate the landscape while also considering the course of a former fjord arm.

Kvaderstensbroen is a stone bridge from the Renaissance, built around the year 1600. The Hærvejen crosses Nymølle Bæk here. There are walking paths of 3 and 4 km in the area around the bridge. This lets you choose between two specific route lengths while discovering a structure where architectural history and the history of the routes meet.
