The Kystmuseet Bangsbo features the Ellingå ship, dating from 1163, in its maritime exhibition. The Krudttårnet now houses an exhibition on the history of Frederikshavn’s harbour. There is also a historic district, museums and botanical attractions in Bangsbo.

Maritime History and Historic Districts

The Kystmuseet Bangsbo is about more than maritime history: the museum also presents exhibitions covering various periods of Danish history. The Ellingå ship, dating from 1163, gives the maritime exhibition a tangible historical connection. If you want to explore Frederikshavn’s history from several perspectives, you can combine this focus with the city’s other cultural attractions.

The Krudttårnet is the oldest building in Frederikshavn and now houses an exhibition on the city’s harbour history. The Fischerklyngen around Strandgade, one of Frederikshavn’s oldest districts, offers another perspective on the historic cityscape. The Frederikshavn Art Museum has been dedicated to modern art and crafts since 1978. The bunker museum at Bangsbo Fort uses around 20 bunkers. The cultural attractions therefore range from city and harbour history to art and the history presented at the bunker museum.

Bangsbo: Gardens, Park and Guided Tours

Bangsbo Botanical Garden was founded on 29 November 1988 as a botanical garden for the benefit of residents and tourists in Frederikshavn. Its rose garden features around 150 varieties of roses. The canals and lakes also form part of the garden landscape, creating habitats for plants, insects and birds. Bangsbo Park covers a total area of 17,500 square metres.

Botanical and cultural-historical interests come together at Boolsen’s Stone Collection. The collection includes worked stones of various kinds, from ancient millstones and medieval baptismal fonts to more recent millstones and ship anchoring stones. Allow around an hour and a half for guided tours of Bangsbo Botanical Garden; tours can be booked. The Bangsbo Flower Festival is a regular, recurring tradition in the garden.

Forest, Route and Coast

Vandværksskoven stretches from the 60-metre-high Cloostårnet to Bangsbo Museum. In the forest, you can walk, mountain bike, fish and ride horses. Another route starts at Møllehuset in Bangsbo and leads to the viewing platform on the summit of Pikkerbakken. This gives you different nature-themed options to plan around: activities in the forest or a route with a clearly named destination.

The coast has a history of its own: Palmestranden is an artificial beach created by sand fill in 1977. If you want to combine Frederikshavn with a ferry trip, services from Frederikshavn Harbour connect to Gothenburg in Sweden, Læsø and Hirsholmen. For a specific crossing, it is a good idea to check the relevant timetable in advance.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

There is a large car park at the harbour within walking distance of the ferries and the city centre; its address is Sydhavnsvej 1. If you include this point of reference in your plans, check the location of a specific hotel against the places you plan to visit and your activities. This keeps your choice aligned with your itinerary rather than a general recommendation.
