Discover Strandby in different ways: at its beaches, around the harbor, and along trails that explore local history and archaeological finds. To plan your stay, choose from swimming spots, fishing, birdwatching and a tour of the old town. The activities offer different points of focus—from a designated bathing spot to maritime history.

Beaches and Nature

North and south of Strandby, white sandy beaches with dunes are considered family-friendly. Strandby Nordstrand faces east and is designated as a bathing spot. The beach on the north side of Strandby Harbor has Blue Flag status. Check before your trip whether the designation is currently in effect.

At Strandby Nord, the Natura 2000 site extends 200 meters north of the beach. This means you can combine a beach visit with a look at the protected natural area, while keeping the two distinct: one is a designated bathing spot, and the other is an area with a defined location north of the beach.

Fishing and Harbor Life

There are different fishing opportunities. Sea trout fishing is possible seasonally at the reef north of Strandby Nord. From the harbor shore, you can cast into deeper water without a boat and fish for cod, saithe, sea trout, mackerel, herring, flounder and garfish, among others. This offers a seasonal opportunity at the reef alongside a variety of potential target species at the harbor.

Strandby Harbor was inaugurated in 1896. Between the 1920s and 1950s, numerous fishing boats from Strandby fished in the North Sea and landed their catches in Grimsby and Hull on England’s east coast. Fish still shape the harbor today: Strandby Fish Auction is one of the few remaining fish auctions on the east coast. Visitors can see many different kinds of fish and shellfish there. Fresh fish and shellfish are sold in the harbor directly from the fishing boats, at the fish houses, or at the auction held every morning at 7:00 a.m.

Trails, Birdlife and Local History

The Strandby-stien is about 7 km long. You can start at the parking lot by the “Hundeskoven” in Bannerslund, at the railway station or at the harbor. Along the trail, signs share stories about Strandby. You can also explore the old town on a walk through the historic district.

The Strandby-stien passes the site by the Elling Å where ships from the Iron Age were found. The trail also features information about the “Strandbyskatten” (Strandby Treasure): two young men found the treasure in 2012; it includes coins and other objects from the Viking Age.

For birdwatching, a route through Bannerslund Skov leads to an observation tower with views of Hirsholmene and the area’s rich birdlife. There is another viewpoint at Strandby Marina: the tower there has binoculars and offers views of Hirsholmene and Læsø. The two towers offer different perspectives—birdwatching in the forest and island views from the marina.

Getting Around

At Strandby Beach, there are toilets and a long ramp along the path from Nørrevej. It provides access to the beach with a stroller or wheelchair. Train and bus connections are within a five-minute walk of Strandby Marina; check current services before your trip.

Strandby Station is a small, unstaffed stop with bicycle parking and easy access to the platforms. Together with the three possible starting points for the Strandby-stien, these offer different ways to get your bearings: a walking trail, arrival by train or the harbor as a starting point.
