The history of a trading town, glassmaking and the harbour give Ebeltoft a range of options for a stay. There are also viewpoints and routes through the surrounding countryside. When planning your accommodation, you can first consider whether culture, ships or outdoor excursions will shape your trip; seasonal activities can then be added.

Trading town, dye works and glass art

The exhibition at Det Gamle RĂ„dhus tells the story of the trading town from the Stone Age to the present day. FarvergĂ„rden offers a different perspective on historic craftsmanship: it is the only surviving dye works in a trading town in Northern Europe. Its garden extends all the way to Strandvejen. From the viewing mound, you can see, among other things, Ebeltoft Vig and the frigate Jylland—bringing history and landscape together in a single view.

Glass is also part of the town’s cultural identity. Glas – Museet for glaskunst has a collection of more than 1,800 works of modern glass art from around the world. At the glassworks and workshop, visitors can see traditional glassmaking and hot-glass techniques in practice. Workshops and activities where children and adults can experiment with glass take place throughout the year. Individual programmes may change, so check the current offerings before your visit.

Maltfabrikken was redeveloped and opened in 2020 as Folkets Fabrik. Today, it is a hub for art, culture, business and entrepreneurship. The programme at Kulturloft includes music, lectures, artist talks, art in various styles and debates. Ebeltoft’s cultural offerings therefore range from an exhibition on the town’s history and traditional crafts to a changing programme of events.

Harbour and maritime history

Ebeltoft Havn combines a fishing harbour with an active marina. Both are just a few steps from the town’s streets, shops and restaurants. Visiting boats can moor at berths for vessels up to 50 feet long and 4.5 metres wide; you can check the current conditions with the harbour before your arrival.

The frigate Jylland has been in Ebeltoft since 1960. The Danish fleet approved Ebeltoft as the frigate’s home port. Historic wooden ships and modern pleasure boats are both welcome in Fregathavn. Guests can use the toilets, showers and electricity at the South and East Piers; check that these facilities are currently available before your trip.

Seasonal options include a trip on the Robarkasse No. 1, the largest jolly boat of the frigate Jylland. In the past, the boat was used to transport crew, coal and provisions. Check dates and weather conditions in advance. Sejlklubben Ebeltoft Vig is also open to those interested in sailing or stand-up paddleboarding; it is best to check participation requirements directly with the club.

Views, wildlife reserve and routes

From SkelhĂžje, the panoramic view stretches west over the rooftops of Ebeltoft to the Mols Bjerge hills and TrehĂžje, across HelgenĂŠs and the Dragsmur isthmus, south to SamsĂž and TunĂž, and east to the island of Hjelm in the Kattegat. The view takes in the town, countryside and islands, without the need to include several viewpoints in your plans.

The eastern part of Ebeltoft Vig, close to town, is designated as a wildlife reserve. The protected area serves year-round as a resting place for flocks of mute swans, mallards and gulls; which birds you see may vary by season. Before taking part in water activities, check the rules that apply to the reserve.

The four Ebeltoft Clover Trails cover a total of 27 kilometres and lead around the town and through the surrounding countryside. Their individual lengths—2.5, 5, 7.5 and 12 kilometres—make it easy to compare the distances. Another option is the Ebeltoft section of the Mols Bjerge Trail. It starts at Østeralle 9, next to Ebeltoft Skole; check parking and access before setting out. You can park in Ebeltoft for the section, then take bus 123 to Femmþller and hike back to your car. Check the current bus service in advance.

Plan for summer events

Jazz pĂ„ Torvet is a long-standing summer tradition: free concerts take place every Saturday from late June to late August. Ebeltoft’s night watchmen are first mentioned towards the end of the 17th century. During the main summer season, from 28 June to 23 August, their walks start at Det Gamle RĂ„dhus at 7 and 8 pm. Since the concert dates and walks are tied to specific seasonal dates, check the schedule before your trip. This lets you combine cultural events with the harbour, the town’s history or time outdoors, without planning your entire visit around a single activity.
