At Skødshoved Strand, coastal activities meet maritime history and a natural environment described in historical accounts. The 30 km Mols Hoved cycling loop passes, among other places, Skødshoved Bro; a seasonal coastal tour by Mols Bjerge National Park circles Skødshoved harbour. There is also the old landing place for packet boats and the Skødshoved bird locality. The route, harbour and natural surroundings offer different starting points for planning your visit.

Coast and harbour history

The Mols Bjerge National Park route description names the 30 km Mols Hoved cycling loop and lists Skødshoved Bro as one of its route points. The seasonal coastal tour by Mols Bjerge National Park offers a different perspective: it circles Skødshoved harbour. Dates and availability may change, so check both if you plan to include the tour in your stay. Skødshoved Bro is also a popular destination for boat trips from Aarhus.

The history of the coast also leads to Skødshoved Bro. In the early 20th century, Skødshoved Bro Jollehavn was an old landing place for packet boats that ran on a scheduled service between Aarhus and Mols. This historic scheduled service should be distinguished chronologically from the seasonal coastal tour. Anyone interested in maritime history will find a tangible link here to the connection between Aarhus and Mols.

Beach, harbour and practical conditions

At Skødshoved Strand, the water reaches a depth of 2 metres about 25 to 30 metres from the shore. These figures may vary depending on conditions. At Skødshoved Marina, for example, you can catch crabs from the pier. These are different ways to experience the beach and harbour—from an activity by the water to a view of the coast.

Skødshoved harbour is easy to reach via Vestre Strandvej, where there are about 80 parking spaces. Parking information may change, so it is worth checking before you set off. The rocky stretch of the “Skødshoved – Yellow Route” has its own restrictions: it is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or for pushchairs. At high tide, parts of it are flooded; tidal conditions vary. Check the water level if you plan to take this stretch.

Bird locality and paths

An ornithological description from 1998 records about 29 hectares of coastal meadows and a small reed swamp in the Skødshoved bird protection area. It also characterises the bird locality as a place where ducks and waders breed and stop over. In the same description, the area is considered difficult to access, although parts of it can be viewed from a public road. As access conditions may change, check the situation before your visit.

The “Skødshoved” trail by “Spor i landskabet” is designated as private and is 2.5 km long.
