You can discover Fuglslev through its church and an unusually well-documented village history. The surrounding area adds landscapes and trails: Stubbe Sø, Jernhatten and the nature trails offer different points of interest for a stay focused on culture and scenery.
The Church and the Village’s History
Fuglslev Church stands in the meadows near the village. Traces of an earlier Romanesque church remain in its north wall. This makes a specific part of the building noteworthy from an architectural-history perspective: the wall preserves evidence of an older church, while the history of the place cannot be reduced to a single era.
Fuglslev is considered both a church village and a former market town. The year 1688 offers a precise numerical picture of the settlement: at the time, it consisted of ten farms of different sizes and six houses along the village road, whose residents owned no land. The contrast between the farms and the houses whose residents had no land illustrates the different living and property conditions within the settlement at the time.
A single dated event also forms part of the village’s history: on Tuesday, 10 August 1706, a Grandestævne—a village assembly—was held in Fuglslev. Here, the Danish term does not refer to a modern event, but to a historical gathering. Together with the documented settlement structure, it complements the architectural traces at the church with a history of village life.
Another commemorative landmark is the Fuglslev-stenen, considered the youngest reunification stone in Syddjurs Municipality. In June 2018, a newly laid stone cairn had been added to it. This date records a condition at the time; it says nothing about its present state.
Stubbe Sø, Birdwatching and Views
In the surrounding area, Stubbe Sø covers 376 hectares and is the largest lake on Djursland. From the birdwatching tower at Stubbe Sø, the view extends across the reed bed and the nearest part of the lake. Many different bird species nest near the tower and are often seen there in spring and summer. Stubbe Sø and the Ulstrup Ådal area also offer good birdwatching opportunities for observant hikers.
If you are considering an overnight stay in nature, there is a shelter site at the eastern end of Stubbe Sø. Check current availability if you would like to stay there overnight. This allows you to include this potential overnight spot in your plans without treating it as accommodation in the village.
Jernhatten offers a different impression of the landscape: it rises 49 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the area. A viewpoint there offers views across the sea. The elevation and the view describe two aspects of the same natural destination: its position in the landscape and the outlook from its summit.
Trails Through the Landscape
The Jernhatten route runs for about 23.5 kilometres through the surrounding area, along gravel roads and smaller country roads. Forest, meadows and hilly terrain shape its course. For your planning, both the approximate distance and the described surfaces and landscape features are relevant.
The Gravlev Nature Trail offers a different kind of route, following a former railway line and now designated as a nature trail for cycling and longer walks. The two routes are therefore described by different features: for the Jernhatten route, the focus is on distance, surface and terrain; for the Gravlev Nature Trail, on the former railway line and its designated uses.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Fuglslev, these differences can help you decide what to focus on: would you mainly like to discover the church and the village’s history, or would you like the surrounding landscape to play a bigger part in your travel plans? The historical details are in the village; the lake, viewpoints and nature trails described here offer further things to explore during your stay.
