Ryomgård can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: railway history, routes of varying lengths, and Gammel Ryomgård as a historic manor estate. The Djurslands Railway Museum and the station give the railway theme a tangible presence in the town. When planning a stay, you can therefore start by choosing a focus: cultural history, a route, or a combination of the two.
Railway Hub and Museum
Ryomgård station was built in 1876 as a railway hub with connections to Randers, Aarhus and Grenaa; later, Gjerrild in North Djursland was added. The railway connection between Randers and Ryomgård operated from 1876 to 1971; the section continuing to Pindstrup remained in operation until 1993.
The Djurslands Railway Museum is located about 400 metres from Ryomgård station and was founded in 1981. The museum was therefore established after services between Randers and Ryomgård had ended, but while the section to Pindstrup was still in use. The station, railway operations and museum thus represent different chapters in the area’s railway heritage.
Routes by Length and Course
Banestien is about 14 kilometres long and runs between Allingåbro and Ryomgård via Auning and Pindstrup. In Ryomgård, it connects to Gjerrildbanestien. This route is about 32 kilometres long and follows gravel roads and paths through flat terrain.
The two routes offer different points of reference when choosing a walk: Banestien names the towns along the way, Auning and Pindstrup, while Gjerrildbanestien also provides information about the surface and terrain. With their different lengths as well, you can choose according to the route, distance and character of the path. The connection in Ryomgård also gives you the option of switching to the other route there.
More Ways to Plan Outings
Cykelrute 20 offers another option. It starts at Grenaa harbour, heads towards Ryomgård and is signposted throughout. Its starting point, direction and signage provide practical guidance when planning a cycling trip. The Letbane can be used for trips to Ryomgård and the surrounding area. If you plan to use it, check the timetable for your travel dates and plan your outings accordingly. The cycle route and Letbane offer options for outings by bicycle and rail, respectively.
Gammel Ryomgård and Its History
Gammel Ryomgård offers a different way to explore history than the station and railway routes. This well-preserved Renaissance manor estate has a history dating back to the Middle Ages and was established as the main manor of a village. The Renaissance classification and medieval origins mark two periods in the history of the same estate. Visitors interested in historic architecture and manor history will find a distinct focus here alongside Ryomgård’s transport history.
