Art in the urban landscape
The sculpture “Borgerne fra Holstebro” stands in Nørreport Torv and consists of casts of twelve Holstebro residents. At the upper end of the pedestrian street Nørregade, “Vandkunsten” offers a different focal point: the work was conceived as a modern city gate. Another bronze sculpture, “Kvinde på kærre”, also known as “Maren å æ woun”, became a symbol of the cultural revolution in Holstebro. As you explore the urban landscape, you will encounter various works of art, each with its own story.
Holstebro Art Museum displays Danish art and crafts from the 1930s to the present day. It also features foreign art and collections of traditional non-Western art. Holstebro Museum presents the history of the area, from the first people in Denmark to the modern city. Holstebro also offers a free guided city tour focusing on art, history and architecture. You can get to know the city through individual works of art, museum themes or a broader look at its history.
Routes and geographical orientation
As a visitor destination, Holstebro Municipality extends in the west from Thorsminde and Vedersø Klit, across Holstebro and its surrounding area, to Vinderup and Handbjerg in the east. Two sections of national cycling routes are designated for cycling enthusiasts: Route 1, the Vestkystruten, can be cycled within the municipality from Vedersø Klit to Thorsminde. Route 12, the Limfjordsruten, runs through the municipality from Handbjerg to the municipal boundary at Sønder Lem Vig. Their endpoints provide a clear point of reference when choosing a suitable section.
Museums and historical perspectives
Hjerl Hede is an open-air museum near Vinderup in Holstebro Municipality. The Old Village Settlement includes preserved and reconstructed buildings from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The museum also includes the Jysk Skovmuseum and the Mosebrugsmuseum, where regional history, old farming methods and crafts come to life again. Here, the historical perspective ranges from buildings from different centuries to themes related to regional life.
Nørre Vosborg is a cultural heritage site with remarkable architecture and 800 years of Danish history; at the same time, it is a lively and dynamic cultural and event centre. The Strandingsmuseum St. George tells a maritime story: it covers the sinking of H.M.S. “St. George” and H.M.S. “Defence”, which went down off Thorsminde in 1811.
The landscape around Tvis Mølle
The area around Tvis Mølle includes woodland, meadows, a river valley, heathland and dry grassland. It also preserves cultural-historical traces of Tvis Monastery, brickmaking and marl extraction. Tvis Mølle Nature Laboratory has two short walking trails along nature paths. The area brings together different landscapes, historical traces and a practical opportunity for a walk.
Farm life up close
At Landbrugets Oplevelsesplads, families and anyone interested can experience Danish agriculture up close and meet calves, piglets, goats and lambs. During seasonal themed days, visitors can also taste ice cream freshly made from cream. This visit offers a different focus from art and history museums: here, the emphasis is on agriculture, animals and a seasonal taste experience.
