The sandy beach, dunes, North Sea and Nissum Fjord define Thorsminde’s coastal character. But there is more to explore than the beach: a hiking route and a cycling route run around the fjord, while fishing, water sports and maritime history complement the natural surroundings. If you’re looking for a hotel in Thorsminde, you can choose where to stay based on whether you’d rather focus on the coast, activities on the water or cultural insights.

Beach between the North Sea and the Fjord

Thorsminde’s beach is a sandy beach with dunes. An accessible path brings pedestrians and wheelchair users closer to the water. The two sides also offer different water sports: the North Sea side is suitable for activities such as windsurfing, while the shallow Nissum Fjord on the other side of Thorsminde is suitable for kitesurfing. This gives you two different bodies of water to choose from for different activities.

Hiking and cycling routes

The approximately 70-kilometre red-marked hiking route around Nissum Fjord is connected to Thorsminde. Regional Route 17 is an approximately 95-kilometre cycling route that also runs around the fjord. The cycling route is about 25 kilometres longer than the hiking route; the two routes also differ in how you travel. On the way to Thorsminde, the regional route runs along the dunes of a narrow spit of land. The tranquil Nissum Fjord lies on one side, and the crashing North Sea on the other.

Fishing, activities and harbour

Fishing is possible around Thorsminde from early spring to late autumn, both at sea and in the fjord. Fish species that can be caught in these waters include herring, mackerel, sea trout and salmon. Visitors can also fish from the harbour breakwaters that extend into the North Sea, or attend a fish auction offered to tourists. Havet & Fjordens Hus in Thorsminde has facilities for activities on the water and on land. Visitors can catch shrimp, flounder and crabs there while wearing waders. Recreational sailors are welcome in the harbour, even though it is not a marina. A lock allows dinghies and flat-bottomed boats to pass to and from Nissum Fjord.

Maritime history and nature

Strandingsmuseum St. George tells the story of the final voyage of the two English ships of the line, HMS St. George and HMS Defence, and their wrecks off Thorsminde on Christmas Day 1811. The museum tower offers 360-degree views of the sea and fjord. An interactive play area lets visitors explore the seabed without getting wet.

Thorsminde Church is housed in a former lifeboat station and was inaugurated on 12 November 1939. Its altarpiece and pulpit originally came from Thyborøn Church. The artwork “Nordsøhavfruen” is also located in Thorsminde and dates from 1989.

The coastal meadows near Thorsminde also shape the area’s natural landscape: they lie along a north–south migratory bird route and are a Natura 2000 site for threatened birds and habitat types.
