Vast coastal meadows shape the landscape of Kalvebod Fælled, where plant and bird life are protected. Nature, water and art reveal different sides of the area in Tårnby Municipality: from protected habitats and walking trails to coastal swimming spots and modern graphic art.
Protected Landscapes and Birdlife
Kalvebod Fælled is part of the EU’s Natura 2000 network and is protected as a nature reserve. Its coastal meadows, in particular, are protected for their unique plant and bird life. Naturpark Amager covers 3,500 hectares and consists of Amager Fælled, Kalvebod Fælled, Kongelunden and Dragør Sydstrand. On a walking route through Kalvebod Fælled, you can watch birds of prey hunting; larks, lapwings, swans, ducks and other migratory birds are also among the birds reported there.
The routes offer different highlights. Hestefælledruten connects forest, meadow and beach, with a view from the new dike. Amarminoen crosses open coastal meadows to the gnarled oaks on the coast at Kongelunden, passing through a bird sanctuary and Pinseskoven, Denmark’s largest self-seeded birch forest. Pinseskovsruten also offers a view of open birch woodland; with a little luck, you may spot fallow deer. In Ugandaskoven, an elevated viewing platform offers a view of the trees and a small pond.
Routes of Different Lengths
If you want to compare specific route lengths, TårnbyTuren and Amarminoen offer two different points of reference: TårnbyTuren is about 15 kilometres long and runs from Kastrup Lystbådehavn through several of the city’s green spaces to Naturpark Amager. Amarminoen is 24 kilometres long, starts at DR Byen, passes through Kalvebod Fælled and ends in the south at Dragør. These figures show the difference in length; the landscapes and endpoints described also offer clues as to which route may interest you more.
TårnbyTuren is accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs. However, some sections follow uneven grass and forest paths. This is worth bearing in mind when planning the route: accessibility and trail conditions should be considered together, rather than judging the route by its length alone.
Coast, Harbour and Water
At Kastrup Strandpark, you can swim in the Øresund from the beach, bathing jetty and diving boards. Fishing, sailing and diving are also possible there. Kastrup Søbad is another, separate place to swim: it can be used year-round free of charge and has accessible changing rooms and toilets. Check the latest information about the facility before your visit.
Kastrup Lystbådehavn also brings together different eras and maritime themes. It includes a historic harbour dating from 1954 and a modern harbour dating from 1985. There is space for around 900 boats, as well as clubhouses and maritime activities. So the waterfront experience is about more than the beach and swimming: it also includes the harbour and its maritime surroundings.
Art in Collections and Public Spaces
Kastrupgårdsamlingen is a state-recognised museum of modern graphic art and presents several special exhibitions each year. Its graphic art collection comprises more than 7,000 works. Most are by artists based in Denmark or elsewhere in the Nordic countries. The museum also offers an educational programme on modern graphic art, where participants can print their own graphic works.
Art can also be discovered outside the collection in Tårnby. With Gå og oplev kunst (“Go and Experience Art”), you can look for statues and sculptures, as well as the blue benches by artist Jeppe Hein. The focus is therefore both on graphic art in the museum and on art in public spaces.
Green Spaces and Practical Information
Byparken has a variety of facilities for exercise and leisure: a nature playground, fitness equipment, areas for skating, pétanque, basketball and cycling, as well as a perennial garden and a beech-hedge maze. Paths and activity trails add to what is on offer. At Skolebotanisk Have, searching for small animals on land and in the water is among the nature and activity options. Other residents may also walk there or sit on benches or on the grass, provided the area is not being used by schools or childcare centres at the time.
For travel, the airport metro station is directly connected to Terminal 3. During the day and evening, the metro runs every four to six minutes; the journey from Nørreport to the airport takes 15 minutes. Check the service frequency and journey time before travelling. The National Aquarium Denmark, Den Blå Planet, is in Kastrup, 600 metres from Kastrup station on metro line M2. On behind-the-scenes tours, visitors can see areas for animal care staff, maintenance corridors, tanks for fish before they are added to the exhibition, and the large pumping and filtration system. Times and booking conditions may change; check with the venue in advance.
When looking for a holiday rental, consider whether nature trails and birdwatching, the water of the Øresund or art will be a particular focus of your trip. Tårnby offers all these different interests, so you do not have to limit yourself to just one way of exploring.
