Explore Halsnæs on foot or by bike and you’ll come across coastal paths, peaceful hiking trails and historic sites. The routes offer a variety of experiences: some follow the coast, while others lead through the landscape of Halsnæs or offer different route lengths. Fishing harbours, nature areas and cultural discoveries add their own distinctive highlights to a visit.

Hiking trails with a range of route profiles

The Fjordstien is a hiking and cycling route that runs close to the coast along Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord. There are several simple nature campsites along the route. The Nordkyststien is also a cycling and hiking route; it runs from Hundested to Helsingør. For a longer hiking route through Halsnæs, the 52.7-kilometre Halsninoen runs from Hundested via Arrenakke and Arrenæs to Strø Bjerge. The Halsninoen is designed primarily for traditional hiking on soft trails. Nature experiences, varied landscapes, peace and quiet are part of its character.

Many regional train stations and bus stops are close to the Halsninoen. Check the latest timetables when planning your trip. Shorter routes offer another way to explore the area: Kongemagt og Vandets Kraft can be walked in 5, 7 or 11 kilometres. Along the way are, among other things, the Dronningholm Castle Ruin and the beaver observation hut near Dronningholm Mose. The Halsnæs Sundhedskorridor is about 10 kilometres long and starts and ends at Hundested Station. Information boards or audio guides accompany the route, along with suggestions for smaller nature activities.

Coastal landscapes and nature areas

Hvide Klint is a protected, nature-oriented open-air area close to town, for children and adults of all ages. Its special features include a 108-metre-long adventure bridge and an underwater trail along the coast. At Liseleje Beach, sandy shores meet the Kattegat coast. The beach is child-friendly and has Blue Flag status; the award and facilities may change seasonally. During the bathing season, from 1 June to 1 September, there is a step-free access route to the water’s edge. Check the latest information before travelling.

Melby Overdrev is the largest heathland on Zealand. You can hike here, observe plants and insects, or swim; bathing conditions vary by season. Ølsted Grusgrav offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. The former gravel pit has been transformed into a recreational nature area with paths, viewpoints and facilities for day trips and outdoor activities. From its highest point, 47 metres above sea level, you can see across Roskilde Fjord and Arresø. At Dronningholm Mose, there is also a freely accessible beaver observation hut that is open year-round. Sightings of the animals are not guaranteed.

Smaller discoveries offer their own highlights, too: Ullerup Skov has a maze and a combined shelter and fire hut with a barbecue area. A bridge runs alongside a small lake. The digital Halsnæs Kayak Map points out suitable options for trips in small watercraft.

Fishing harbour towns and industrial history

Kikhavn is the oldest fishing harbour town on Halsnæs. Its large thatched farmsteads and houses preserve a historic village landscape that tells the story of the connection between farming and fishing. Cars are not allowed in the narrow, winding lanes: leave your car in the car park outside the village and explore Kikhavn on foot. Check access information before your trip.

Frederiksværk is designated a national industrial monument. Gjethuset is a converted 18th-century cannon foundry building, now hosting theatre, concerts and international art exhibitions. If you plan to attend an event, check the dates in advance, as the programme may change. At Arsenalet, a museum presents more than 250 years of industrial development. It also serves as an information centre for Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park and its nature experiences. Krudtværksmuseet showcases historic gunpowder mills along the canal.

At the Dyssekilde eco-community, visitors can explore the village’s distinctive architecture and learn about the development of a modern eco-community. Dates and booking options may vary. At Hundested Harbour, a maritime atmosphere brings open workshops together with activities for families. At Backhaus Brown, glass art is created in a lively glass workshop. Visitor arrangements may vary, so check in advance.
