Those looking to combine cultural history with time outdoors in Gilleleje will find a variety of options: the Gilleleje Museum traces the area’s history from holiday idylls and fishing to the escape across the Øresund. Coastal paths, lighthouse history and other experiences offer different points of interest. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the museum, walking routes and landscape.
Fishing history and the escape across the Øresund
The Gilleleje Museum explores holiday idylls, fishing history and the escape across the Øresund. Visitors can explore historic houses and see holiday apartments from the 1950s. The museum garden also features a holiday home that may be one of Denmark’s smallest. Historic types of homes and local history are presented side by side, so the visit is not limited to a single topic.
The exhibition “October 1943 – the Escape to Sweden” adds eyewitness accounts to this perspective. It includes accounts from people who fled and from people who helped them. Both the experience of fleeing and the support people received are therefore part of the exhibition.
Lighthouses and cultural events
The Fyrhistorisk Museum is housed in the former lighthouse keeper’s residence at Vestre Fyr. Nakkehoved Fyr consists of two lighthouses, an eastern and a western one, both built in 1772. On clear days, Sweden can be seen on the horizon from Nakkehoved Fyr. Kulturhavn Gilleleje also has a mezzanine that hosts concerts. These different themes offer a change of pace between historic architecture and lighthouse history, views and cultural events.
Coastal path and protected landscape
The Gilbjergstien coastal walking path runs along the coast from the town of Gilleleje to Gilbjerghoved. From the cliffs, which reach up to 33 metres high, the view extends across the Kattegat to the Swedish peninsula of Kullen. The path is about 2.5 kilometres long and runs mostly through protected areas. This combines a manageable distance with a clearly defined coastal route and viewpoint.
A protected natural area of grassland with paths and benches borders Gilleleje Vest Strand. Gilleleje Vest is part of the Blue Flag scheme. Beach information is seasonal; check the details for your planned travel dates before your trip.
Hiking, a quiz maze and alpaca tours
“Kierkegaard by Nature” is a 12-kilometre interactive walking route following in Søren Kierkegaard’s footsteps. It starts at Stejlepladsen by Gilleleje Harbour and can be walked year-round. Compared with the approximately 2.5-kilometre Gilbjergstien, the route is considerably longer. The routes also differ in focus: Gilbjergstien follows the coast, while “Kierkegaard by Nature” follows in Kierkegaard’s footsteps.
The Gilleleje Labyrinten offers a different kind of outing: it is a quiz maze with a network of paths spanning more than seven kilometres and five entrances. Guided alpaca tours are available in the surrounding area. Alongside the two walking routes, visitors can therefore choose a quiz experience or a guided activity; the distances given refer to different offerings.
