In Hornbæk, you can choose between a stay on the sandy beach, trails through Hornbæk Plantation and experiences around the harbor. The differences between these highlights can help you tailor your travel dates and daily plans to your interests. A recurring harbor tradition and archaeological evidence also give the town a distinct cultural identity.

Sandy beach and harbor activities

Hornbæk Beach is wide and sandy, with fine-grained sand and dunes that provide shelter. West of Hornbæk Harbor, there is a large sandy beach with dunes behind it. This section of the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag. Check the award status again for your travel dates; the condition of the shoreline can also change.

Close to the beach and harbor is Hornbæk Strandlegeplads, which has been located at the harbor since 2010. Activities include climbing, swinging and balancing, as well as imaginative play as captain of your own ship. Individual play facilities may change; if you are planning specifically around them, check the latest information before your visit.

Harbor festivals and harbor history

Hornbæk Havnefest is a recurring harbor tradition that dates back to 1881. Today, the festival runs for three days; it is scheduled to take place again in calendar week 30 in 2027. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and arrangements for the relevant year.

The history of the harbor also has distinct periods: construction of today’s harbor, with its two breakwaters, began in 1876, and it was handed over to the fishermen in 1878. An earlier attempt to build a harbor on the exposed coast of North Zealand also dates back more than 200 years. Hornbæk Havnefest thus carries on a long harbor tradition, while the construction of today’s harbor has its own precisely dated history.

Trails through the plantation and landscape

There are several ways to explore the landscape on foot in Hornbæk Plantation. A yellow-marked hiking trail is about 8 km long and passes through most of the forest. Markings and trail conditions may change on site. Another way to explore is the Find-Vej route, where you look for orienteering posts and record the associated letter codes. Check access details for the course in advance.

If you are looking for a shorter themed trail, the plantation has the approximately 3 km Istids- og sandflugtsruten. It passes through a landscape shaped by the Ice Age; trail conditions and information along the route may change. Compared with the yellow-marked hiking trail, at around 8 km, it is considerably shorter but has a different thematic focus.

The plantation is also home to archaeological evidence: there are 25 Bronze Age burial mounds and an ancient sacrificial stone dating from around 3500 BC, which was used as a fertility symbol. Another trail system runs around Hornbæk Lake and Horneby Engsø, as well as through the adjacent marshland. Access may vary depending on conditions. Pike, zander, eels and grass carp are among the fish found in Hornbæk Lake.

Cycling, water and getting here

There is also a regional cycling connection: Nordkyststien, cycle route 47 from Hundested to Helsingør, passes through the Hornbæk Plantation area and along the coast from Dronningmølle to Ålsgårde. Erosion can affect individual sections; check route conditions when planning your trip.

At SUPspot Hornbæk, visitors can rent stand-up paddleboards and receive instruction on how to use them. As operator details may change, it is a good idea to check the current offer if you plan to make this activity part of your itinerary. Store Badedag is also held every year at Hornbæk Beach to mark the start of the summer swimming season. About 900 people go into the sea; the timing and program may change.

The train from Helsingør to Gilleleje stops in the center of Hornbæk. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date, as services and operating patterns may change. When looking for a hotel in Hornbæk, your planned highlights can help you choose when to visit—for example, the summer swimming season, Havnefest, or hikes and trails in the plantation.
