Gribskov and Helsinge bring together forest, cycling and cultural history, offering different reasons to visit. Helsinge lies in the heart of Gribskov, between the forests and the bathing resorts of the North Coast. The Danish Nature Agency describes Gribskov as Denmark’s largest old-growth forest. Marked hiking trails, Cycling Route 32 and historic sites offer different points of focus: you can include outdoor activities and cultural history in your travel plans.

Forest and outdoor activities in Gribskov

Six hiking trails are marked in Gribskov, including short and long routes. This range helps you tailor the length of a hike to the time you have available: you can choose a shorter or longer route. If you’d rather spend a day cycling, Route 32 offers a different kind of activity and passes through Helsinge.

Historical traces of Helsinge

Helsinge Church provides a specific historical point of reference: the small choir and the eastern part of the nave probably date from the first half of the 12th century. Mor Gribs Hule, also known as Mother Grib’s Cave, represents a much earlier period. This well-preserved megalithic tomb dates from the Neolithic period, about 5,000 years ago, and lies west of Store Gribsø, on the other side of Helsingevej opposite the car park. Together, these sites span a vast period of time—from a Stone Age tomb to the oldest parts of the church, which probably date from the 12th century.

At Helsinge Gadekær, the Mindemuren is listed as number 8 in the Levende Sten project. It is one of the project’s 63 selected memorial stones and plaques, which can be visited outdoors. Scan an attached QR code to hear or read the story of the Mindemuren on site.

Cycling Route 32 and practical information

Cycling Route 32 runs from Helsinge station along Gadekærvej, past the pedestrian zone, village pond and church to the north, and then out of town. It is 26 kilometres long and signposted along its entire length with the blue bicycle route marker numbered 32. This combines a clearly defined distance with several named points in Helsinge. Compared with the short and long marked hiking trails in Gribskov, the cycle route offers a specific total distance for planning your day.

Pibe Mølle lies south of Helsinge in a hilly landscape. The mill operates on selected days of the year; check which operating days are scheduled for your visit before you arrive. Helsinge Library may also be relevant to your plans: on weekends and public holidays, it offers access during self-service opening hours. As access arrangements may change, check the latest information before visiting.
