Počenice-Tetětice offers a range of historical and cultural points of interest: local history, church architecture, archaeological finds and carnival tradition. In Počenice, these include the present-day Church of St Bartholomew and the statue of St Joseph; in Tetětice, there is also a chapel and a landscape feature near the source of the Haná.
Churches, history and archaeological finds
The first written record of Počenice dates from 1283. The present-day Church of St Bartholomew was built between 1764 and 1768 on the site of the former Church of St Peter. These are two distinct historical dates: 1283 marks the town’s first written mention, while the later dates mark the construction of the present church building.
The church has a single-nave layout, a west tower, an eastern presbytery and a sacristy adjoining on the north side. The single-nave layout forms the main part of the church; the tower, presbytery and sacristy are on the respective sides named. The spatial layout and the earlier church thus add to the historical context.
The statue of St Joseph is another attraction in Počenice. In Tetětice, the Chapel of the Guardian Angels stands in the southern part of the village and has a bell tower. The comparison highlights two different sacred buildings: a church with a more detailed spatial layout and a chapel with a bell tower.
An important archaeological site lies in and around the municipality of Počenice-Tetětice. The finds span the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Lusatian culture and later hillfort period. This chronological range offers a different perspective on the past from the written record of 1283 and the 18th-century church.
Streams and landscapes around Počenice and Tetětice
Počenice lies at the confluence of the Uhřický potok and the Tištínka stream. The municipality as a whole has a broader geographical setting: Počenice-Tetětice lies in the foothills of the Chřiby, at the transition between the Haná region and the Orlovická vrchovina highlands. This brings together two different scales: the specific confluence in Počenice and the municipality’s position between named landscape regions.
In Tetětice, north of the edge of the village and near the source of the Haná stream, there is a small wood with a small retention basin. While the confluence brings together two streams in one place, this landscape feature links the Haná headwaters with woodland and a basin. Together, the two descriptions highlight different landscape features within the municipality.
Carnival and practical information
A description from 2017 calls the carnival procession a long-standing tradition: people in costume paraded through the village accompanied by two accordion players. During the house visits described there, they were given doughnuts and Boží milosti, a Czech carnival pastry. Music, costumes and pastries are among the specific elements of the tradition recorded in the account. If you would like to see the procession, check locally whether the procession and house visits are taking place this year.
A description from 2015 also introduced the municipality’s mobile guide. It included information about nearby attractions, food and drink, and services, as well as news about cultural and social events in the region. Before travelling, check whether this mobile service is still available.
