Obyčtov combines an unusual church with outdoor art and the landscape of the Oslava Valley. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, the giant tortoise Želva and the local pilgrimage tradition offer different points of interest. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on architectural history, religious occasions, or a stay that includes hiking and scenery.
Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary: History and Design
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was completed in 1735 to a design by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel and is listed as a protected cultural monument under registration number ÚSKP 34105/7-4317. Its unusual single-nave floor plan forms part of a polygonal structure with four rectangular chapel extensions. The structure’s shape resembles the body of a tortoise. “Single-nave” describes the arrangement with one nave; the tortoise comparison, by contrast, refers to the exterior shape and extensions. Polygonal means that the structure consists of several straight sides rather than a circular outline.
Želva and the Tortoise Motif
Since 2010, the concrete statue Želva, a giant tortoise by sculptor Michal Olšiak, has stood in the park on the banks of the Oslava in Obyčtov. It is located along a red-marked hiking trail. The tortoise motif thus appears in the village in two different forms: as a resemblance in the church’s architecture and as a freestanding outdoor sculpture. This creates a tangible thematic connection for travellers interested in both buildings and outdoor art.
The Oslava Valley and Its Landscape
Obyčtov lies in the Bítešská vrchovina hills, in a picturesque valley of the Oslava. The Oslava connects the landscape setting with the statue’s location in the park: Želva stands on the riverbank, while the valley provides the wider local context. The river landscape and hills therefore complement the architectural themes with a distinct focus on scenery.
Pilgrimages and Local History
Pilgrimages are a tradition in Obyčtov. They include one pilgrimage around the Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and another around the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. If you want to plan your trip around either occasion, check the dates in advance.
Obyčtov is also home to the Rychta, a multi-storey building dating from the mid-18th century. Together with the church, it offers another tangible point of interest for a stay focused on local history. Both buildings date from the 18th century: the church was completed in 1735, and the Rychta dates from the middle of that century.
Getting There and Planning Your Trip
The nearby Ostrov nad Oslavou railway station may be useful for getting there; it is part of an integrated transport system. Check current connections in advance if you plan to use the station as a reference point.
These themes offer two distinct focuses for planning your trip.
