Nové Mesto Na Morave lies on the southern edge of the Žďárské vrchy hills. The town combines a distinctive history with a museum and gallery, as well as opportunities for cross-country skiing, roller skiing, running and swimming.
City History and Regional Culture
The Church of St. Kunigunde is the oldest monument in the town’s history and stands out as a landmark on the town square. Gothic and Baroque elements come together here with sgraffito decoration by local artist Karel Němec. The building thus brings together several clearly identifiable architectural elements with a distinct local artistic touch.
The Horácké Museum is housed in the building of the old Renaissance town hall, dating from the 16th century. Its themes range from folk culture, glassmaking and ironworking to skiing in the northern part of Moravian Horácko. Regional culture and crafts are presented alongside the history of sport.
The collection of ski equipment and clothing is particularly unusual. It documents the development of skis and bindings, the production of the Sport company, as well as prizes and medals. The focus on skiing therefore covers not just a sport, but also technological development and the history of production.
The Horácká Gallery is housed in a former Renaissance chateau on Vratislavovo náměstí. The building’s history is itself part of the town’s cultural heritage: the gallery is located in a former chateau.
House No. 13 commemorates the victims of the Holocaust through the story of the Jewish Brada family. This memorial site adds a specific family history and its connection to the Holocaust to the town’s history.
Choose Sports Facilities by Activity
The 4 km Příměstský okruh is located close to Nové Mesto Na Morave and is groomed for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. Grooming is weather-dependent. The Vysočina Arena has roller-ski loops with a total length of 8.5 km, as well as marked running trails ranging from 2 to 13 km. These figures refer to different facilities: a total length is given for the roller-ski loops, while a range is given for the running trails. You can therefore first choose your preferred activity, then find the route length that suits you.
Městské lázně has a 25 m swimming pool with four lanes. If swimming is important to your plans, check the latest access and service conditions before your visit.
Getting There and Finding a Hotel
Nové Město na Moravě railway station is on line 256 between Žďár nad Sázavou, Nové Město na Moravě and Tišnov. This provides a specific starting point for planning your rail journey; check the current timetable for departures.
The tourist information centre offers guided tours of the town centre throughout the year. They introduce visitors to the town’s history and notable figures. The tour therefore offers a different focus from the museum, with its themes of folk culture, crafts and ski history. If you’re interested in the guided tour, you can plan it as a separate way to explore the town’s history.
With this focus in mind, you can compare accommodation options more precisely against your own travel plans.
