Horní Jiřetín combines the original Baroque furnishings of its church with views from the main tower and a route through the reclaimed landscape of the former ČSA open-pit mine. This gives you a choice of culture, views and outdoor activity in different forms. Would you like to combine a visit to the church with a view over Jiřetín, or are you more drawn to a steeper final climb or views of the mining landscape and the Ore Mountains on a tour?

Church, Views and Baroque Sculptures

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has original and very valuable Baroque furnishings. A visit to the church can also include a climb to the viewing terraces on the main tower. From there, you can see all of Jiřetín and the surrounding area.

The lower part of Horní Jiřetín is home to four valuable Baroque sculptures: the Calvary sculpture, the statue of Saint Lawrence, the sculptural group of Saint George, and the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. All four have been professionally restored over the past fifteen years and are protected as immovable cultural monuments. The equestrian statue of Saint George depicts the saint fighting a dragon. Bernard Dörl created this early Baroque work in 1691.

The church and sculptures offer two different ways to experience local Baroque art: the original furnishings of a sacred interior and protected works in the lower part of town.

Jezeří Castle: History in Several Building Phases

Jezeří Castle offers another architectural-history highlight. It developed from a 14th-century Gothic castle, first into a Renaissance residence and later into a Baroque castle. This progression—from its medieval origins through the Renaissance to the Baroque period—brings the castle’s different historical building phases to life. It opened to the public in June 1996. If you are planning a visit today, check current visiting arrangements.

Routes with Different Highlights

The Horní Jiřetín–Jezeří cycling route is seven kilometres long, mostly easy, and suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. It ends with a steeper climb, which you should bear in mind when planning your ride. Check current trail conditions locally.

The “Kolem dolu ČSA” route is accessible from Horní Jiřetín and passes through the reclaimed landscape of the former ČSA open-pit mine. The route is listed as nine kilometres; the shorter version described is about eight kilometres long. It is suitable for walkers and cyclists and offers views of the open-pit mine, the Ore Mountains and Jezeří Castle. Since reclamation work is ongoing, this tour features a landscape in transition.

The Jezeří route offers a mostly easy cycling trail with a steeper final climb. The longer distance options and views across the mining landscape are the main features of “Kolem dolu ČSA”. This lets you choose between a defined climb and a route with wide-ranging landscape views.
