Šatov brings together winegrowing, local history and border fortifications. Specific points of interest for a stay include a publicly accessible fortification complex on the southern edge of the village, a painted wine cellar in the sandstone slope, a themed circular trail and an educational vineyard with old grape varieties. If you choose a destination based on different interests, Šatov offers several clearly distinct perspectives: military history sites, historic village character and wine traditions.
Border fortifications on the southern edge of the village
The Areál československého opevnění v Šatově, with the infantry blockhouse MJ–S 3 “Zahrada”, lies on the southern edge of Šatov and is open to the public. The reconstructed blockhouse has been restored to its 1980s condition and contains two fortress cannons, as well as heavy and light machine guns. A 9-metre-high watchtower stands nearby. The named infantry blockhouse, its armament and the nearby tower provide various specific points of reference for learning about the fortifications.
Historic village character and the Malovaný sklep
The Boží hrob chapel, the perimeter wall, the gate and the associated grounds are registered as protected cultural heritage. Šatov is also a village conservation area. Throughout the cadastral area, there are numerous centuries-old houses, wine cellars and wine presses. This designation broadens the view beyond individual buildings to encompass different parts of the historic village character.
The Malovaný sklep is a wine cellar in a sandstone slope above Šatov, decorated with three-dimensional paintings. Its name does not indicate its function: wine was never made or stored there. For visitors, the combination of a wine cellar and three-dimensional decoration is a distinctive cultural highlight.
Nature trail and old grape varieties
The “Za historií, vínem a opevněním ŠATOVA” nature trail is an easy circular route of about 3.5 kilometres, with moderate changes in elevation. It can be extended by about 1 kilometre. The 18 information panels cover the history of this border community, local fortifications and military bunkers, significant monuments, and Šatov’s long-standing winegrowing tradition. The themed trail thus brings together various aspects of the community in a single loop.
The educational vineyard of old grape varieties was established in 2001 and showcases 19 old varieties that originally grew in Czech and Moravian vineyards. Each variety is identified by an information panel with basic details. While the educational vineyard focuses on individual grape varieties, the nature trail covers a broader range of subjects, from local history to winegrowing.
Seasonal wine events
The events also have different seasonal highlights. The Festival mladých vín is a wine festival held in November and associated with the traditional St. Martin’s wine festival. Dny otevřených sklepů is among the popular events held in June. Toulky vinicemi Šatova is an August event that takes visitors through the vineyards of Šatov. Specific event dates may vary from year to year, so check the date of the festival you are interested in before your trip.
