A late Romanesque church portal, a wetland habitat with a plant community shaped by local salinisation, and a beehive under glass show just how varied the subjects in Mikulovice are. You can get to know the place through both its nature and species, and its architectural history. When planning your trip, consider which of these interests you most.

Nature around Mikulovické jezero

Mikulovické jezero is a natural monument that protects an aquatic and wetland habitat. Local salinisation shapes a plant community that is rare in this part of Moravia. The distinctive feature of the area’s natural character is therefore not just the body of water, but also the interplay between the wetland habitat and salt-influenced plant life.

The area around Mikulovické jezero is also a breeding ground for species including the common spadefoot, European tree frog and green toad. Marsh harriers, common moorhens, common snipes and great reed warblers have also been observed at the lake; which birds you may see can vary by season. These details bring two distinct aspects of the area to life: it serves as a breeding habitat for amphibians, while the birds observed there offer another perspective on the natural monument.

Beekeeping Nature Trail and Treasure Hunt

The Moravian Beekeeping Nature Trail in Mikulovice offers a different perspective on nature. It features a real beehive, where you can observe the activity of the bee colony through glass. Rather than surveying a habitat, the focus here is on a single colony. This distinction can help you choose: the natural monument represents a habitat and a variety of species, while the nature trail offers an engaging insight into the life of bees.

Questing s Málinkou is a 3.5 km adventure through Mikulovice. It offers a different focus from the nature trail: the emphasis is on a route through the village, rather than observing a beehive. The Questing brochure is available to download as a 16 MB PDF. If you would like to include the treasure hunt in your plans, you can download the brochure in advance.

Architectural history and local heritage

The Church of St Peter and Paul is a prominent landmark in Mikulovice’s architectural history. It dates from the third quarter of the 13th century and is late Romanesque; the apse, nave and portal have been preserved. The church was remodelled in the Baroque style around 1766. Two clearly distinct periods are thus represented in the same church building: the late Romanesque structure with its preserved elements, and the later Baroque remodelling.

Another example of vernacular architecture is the stone wayside shrine Boží muka, dating from the second quarter of the 19th century. Mikulovice’s sights also include a statue of Saint Florian. These heritage features complement the church’s history with other examples of local architectural and cultural history.

An outbuilding stands east of the rectory. It is an integral part of an area of town-planning, architectural and art-historical value. Its location and the significance of the area offer a different way into the history of the village than an individual wayside shrine or the church. Together with the church and wayside shrine’s different construction periods, these features span the 13th to the 19th century, though they do not all belong to the same era.

If you are looking for holiday accommodation in Mikulovice, you can choose your destination based on your interests: would you rather explore a wetland habitat and its wildlife, or are church architecture and other cultural heritage more your priority? Nature and architectural history offer different considerations when planning your trip.
