Jevišovice combines architectural history with a technical monument and a long cycling loop. Starý zámek stands on a rocky outcrop in a bend of the Jevišovka; the “Krajem dvou řek” route starts and ends in the town. There are also historic buildings from different centuries and a park with a variety of trees and paths. This lets you plan your visit around your interests: castle history, water engineering, cycling or the town’s broader history.

Castle history and distinct dates

Starý zámek in Jevišovice was built in the first third of the 15th century by the Jevišovice branch of the House of Kunštát. Its location is closely tied to the river landscape: the castle stands on a rocky outcrop in a bend of the Jevišovka. Several periods of architecture meet here. The Gothic core was altered in the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. So when considering its architectural history, it is worth distinguishing the Gothic core from the later changes rather than assigning the castle to just one style period.

Pustý hrad marks an earlier historical period: the castle was founded by the Lords of Kunštát at some point before 1289. Comparing it with Starý zámek brings the different dates into focus: one was founded before 1289, while the other was built in the first third of the 15th century. The parish church of sv. Josefa adds another date to the picture. It dates from 1830 and contains an organ dating from 1748. These dates refer to two different things: the church building and the instrument.

The reservoir and cycling route as distinct highlights

Jevišovice Reservoir was built between 1894 and 1897 and is a technical monument. Its construction period and present-day use tell different aspects of its history: the reservoir is currently used mainly for fishing. To understand it, both its age and its predominant recreational use today are important.

The “Krajem dvou řek” cycling route adds a specific loop ride. It is 53.3 kilometres long and starts and ends in Jevišovice. Most of it runs through Jevišovka Nature Park. Its length, circular route and course give the ride a distinct place in travel planning: the start and finish are in the town, while much of the route passes through the nature park. This makes it easy to distinguish the cycling loop from the town’s historical attractions.

Park, granary and memorial site

The park at Nový zámek includes historic trees, clearings interspersed with meadows and an extensive network of paths. These features describe the park in several different ways: old trees, open meadow areas and paths. They give the place a character distinct from that of the individual historic buildings, without reducing the park landscape to a single feature.

Sýpka Jevišovice also brings together architectural history and later use. The granary dates from around 1750, is a protected monument and was converted into a cultural and sports centre. There is also a monument on Žalov Hill featuring the distinctive Hussite chalice symbol. Together with the dates for Starý zámek, Pustý hrad and the church, this shows a local history that cannot be attributed to just one building: different periods and forms of remembrance stand side by side.

Wine tasting and finding your way around town

“Zámecká vinařská romance” is a recurring public wine tasting in Jevišovice. If you would like to include it in your trip, check the date of the particular event, as individual dates are time-sensitive. The visitor information centre is located at the roundabout in the town centre and provides a clear reference point for finding your way around.
