Medlice lies in the valley of the Přeskačský potok stream. Two small ponds are located south of the village. The village’s history includes archaeological finds and written records, while the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius and a monument in the village square provide further tangible points of reference. This offers different themes to shape a stay around: early history, remembrance, traditional customs or the landscape around the stream.
History from Early Times to the 19th Century
Records dating from 1273 to 1285 mention LudvĂk z Medlic. The name establishes a specific connection to the late 13th century. Graves of the ĂšnÄ›tice culture, found in fields near the road to HornĂ Kounice, date back even further. They are from approximately the 17th century BC. Graves of French soldiers are recorded for the years 1805 to 1809; in addition, some French troops travelled from PĹ™eskaÄŤe through Medlice to HornĂ Kounice. These references shed light on different aspects: the dates place the graves in time, while the sequence of places describes the movement of some of the troops. Together, the finds and written references show how far apart Medlice’s historical points of reference are in time.
Chapel and Memorial
The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius is a landmark of Medlice and has been extensively reconstructed. A monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands in the village square, opposite the municipal office. The chapel and monument thus represent different local themes: the dedication to the two saints and remembrance of the victims of the world wars. The monument’s location places it specifically in the village square opposite the municipal office.
Stream, Ponds and the Natural Swimming Area
The Přeskačský potok stream gives its name to the valley where Medlice lies. Two small ponds are located south of the village; the history of swimming concerns one of them. An older visitor guide describes how this pond was converted into a natural swimming area and the necessary facilities were built on its banks. If you plan to visit the swimming area during your stay, check in advance whether access and operation will be possible during your visit. This preserves the distinction between the two ponds described as part of the landscape and the one pond converted into a swimming area.
Traditional Customs
An older visitor profile records a procession on the Sunday before Easter: girls carry a Smrtolka decorated with colourful ribbons through the village. Traditional customs also include a traditional masked carnival procession through Medlice, followed by an evening celebration, as well as a pilgrimage in honour of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The examples differ in their occasion: the procession takes place before Easter, the masked procession is followed by an evening celebration, and the pilgrimage honours the two saints. If you would like to attend a specific event, check the current dates in advance.
