Cycling Routes and Walking Trails
The Mucha Cycling Route is a 20 km circular route and the longest of the three routes described. It leads to historically, architecturally and ecologically interesting places in the cadastral area of Šanov and the surrounding area, and connects to major regional cycle paths and routes. For comparison, the long circular trail through Údolím lásky is 5.4 km long and leads to the edge of the Karlov Nature Reserve; the Karlov Discovery Loop is 4.3 km long and leads to the dam of the Horní Karlov pond. While the Mucha Cycling Route brings together different themes and regional cycling connections, the two shorter routes focus on specific natural attractions.
From the dam, you can observe the valley landscape of the Příční potok and the water surfaces of both ponds. At the opposite end is a wildlife hide, which can be used to observe the animals there without disturbing them. If you are choosing based on nature attractions, the valley and pond views are on one side, and wildlife observation on the other. This contrast makes the destinations on the 4.3 km loop more specific than the distance alone suggests.
Karlov, Spring Festival and Sport
The Karlov Nature Reserve preserves a remnant of natural oak forests and a hornbeam-maple forest surrounded by extensive stands of black locust. The contrast between the natural forest remnant and the surrounding black locust stands gives the nature theme a different focus from the views of the water and valley at the pond. If you are interested in forest composition, you can consider this focus alongside the destinations on the circular routes.
The small spring festival Otvírání studánky also connects Šanov with Karlov: Šanov has held it regularly since 2009, and the programme includes a cycling trip to the Karlov Nature Reserve. The 2025 events calendar also listed the festival. If you would like to include it in your trip, check the specific event dates in advance. This allows you to treat the festival as a separate occasion alongside the circular routes and regional cycling, without tying your plans to a particular date.
The Šanov Sports Centre has an indoor sports hall for futsal, basketball, floorball, tennis, volleyball, nohejbal and aerobics. The hall offers a different sporting focus from the routes: here, the emphasis is on the indoor sports listed, while the routes are cycling trails and walks with a nature or cultural theme. The sports activities described therefore include both a longer cycling loop and several specific indoor sports.
Architectural and Art History
Emin zámek was originally called Emin dvůr and was built in 1882 by Eduard Khuen-Belassy for his wife, Emanuela Khuen-Belassy. The young painter Alfons Mucha worked on the decoration of some of the interiors. The reason for its construction and its artistic decoration offer two distinct historical points of interest: the building’s origins and the work on parts of its interiors. Emin zámek currently houses a social care facility and is therefore not open to the public. This restriction is important when planning a visit: its architectural and artistic history is a cultural topic, but the building itself is not open to the public as a visitor attraction.
