Onšov can be explored through its landmarks and trails: the history of St. Anne’s Chapel dates back to the 18th century, a classicist wayside shrine stands out for its distinctive shape, and the Pěší Claryho okruh leads through the village. This lets you consider cultural history and a hiking option together when choosing where to stay.

Chapel and Wayside Shrine

Historical records mention Onšov in 1323 as part of the Vranov estate. Another chapter of its history concerns the Chapel of St. Anne: the present-day chapel was built in 1835 to replace a chapel dating from 1754. It has two smaller bells. The hiking directions also provide a specific landmark: in the village square, the Pěší Claryho okruh turns left at the large chapel.

Another architectural destination is the Čtyřboká poklona, a classicist wayside shrine with four sides on a rectangular ground plan. It stands very close to Onšov, on the edge of Vranov Forest Park in the direction of Vranov nad Dyjí. According to art-historical assessments, its distinctive trefoil gable refers to the cult of Panny Marie Třídubské. The description thus connects a clearly recognisable architectural form with a possible religious interpretation, presented as an attributed interpretation.

On Foot Through Onšov

The Pěší Claryho okruh is a six-kilometre circular hiking trail classified as moderate. It passes through Onšov; in the village square, continue left at the large chapel. Its length, difficulty rating and the described turning point offer different planning cues: you can take the distance and rating into account while also considering the route through the village.

The Karla Clary Educational Trail has six information panels and three benches. There is also a summit register at the viewpoint by Clary’s Cross. The panels and benches are practical landmarks for anyone who likes to take in information while walking or plan a break. The viewpoint and summit register add another named location along the educational trail.

Landscape and Orientation

Onšov lies on a plateau that drops steeply to the southwest towards the Dyje Canyon. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by the buildings and historic landmarks, but also by the marked change in elevation towards the river valley.

The Stříbrné vodopády, also known as the Onšovské vodopády, consist of five smaller waterfalls. They lie at the northwestern edge of Podyjí National Park, on the cadastral boundary between Onšov and Vranov nad Dyjí. The two names refer to the same waterfalls; their number and location help place them in the landscape.
