Jamolice can be explored through two historical focal points: the ruins of Templštejn Castle and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Their stories span different periods in the history of the town, from the settlement of the Knights Templar to the later construction of the castle. The yellow-marked hiking trail also provides a direct link from Jamolice to the castle. This gives visitors a cultural highlight as well as a clearly identified route to plan.

Templštejn Castle Ruins: Location and History

The castle ruins lie on a spur of the plateau above the right bank of the Jihlávka, about two kilometres northwest of Jamolice. The combination of the plateau and the riverbank defines the topographical setting of the castle site. The approximate direction and distance provide a point of reference from the town and help visitors see Templštejn as a destination in its own right.

Templštejn Castle, with an outer fortification, was built between 1281 and 1298 and abandoned after the mid-16th century. It is an important archaeological site. An earlier date takes us back to the history of the town: in 1232, the Knights Templar settled in Jamolice and initially established a church with a parish. The dates show two distinct steps: the order’s settlement in the town came first, followed later by the castle’s construction. This distinction is useful for putting the history in context; it separates the religious establishment from the building history of Templštejn without treating them as a single event.

The Church and Medieval Building History

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Jamolice has a Romanesque core that probably dates from the second half of the 13th century. This is a different kind of dating from that of the castle: the church’s probable date refers to its core, while Templštejn has a construction period of 1281 to 1298. Both histories belong to the 13th century, but the dates do not refer to the same event. Visitors interested in architecture can compare a Romanesque building element with a castle complex featuring an outer fortification.

Hiking Trail and Getting There

The yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Jamolice to Templštejn Castle. Check the markings and trail conditions before setting out. For bus planning, IDS-JMK route 441 connects Moravský Krumlov, Jamolice, Dukovany, Rouchovany and Hrotovice. Check the timetable before travelling, as transport information can change. The bus route and the hiking trail answer different planning questions: one connects the towns listed, while the other leads from Jamolice to the castle.

When looking for a holiday rental in Jamolice, you can first decide which focus you want to shape your stay: the local church and early history of the order, or the hiking trail to the castle. History enthusiasts can explore several different dates, while visitors heading to the ruins should check the trail markings and conditions. If you plan to travel by bus, checking the timetable is also part of the preparation.
