Hostim lies in the gently rolling landscape of the Jevišovická pahorkatina. Two practical starting points can help you plan your trip: cycling routes pass through the town, and its buildings represent different periods and functions. The historic Haberská stezka, later also known as Císařská cesta, also runs near Hostim.

Cycling Routes Through Hostim

The “Jevišovicko po stopách Raduita de Souches” cycling route passes through Hostim. The Jevišovický okruh I also runs through the town; it is a circular cycling route through Jevišovice, Olbramkostel and Hostim. The names and descriptions offer different points of reference: the first route features Raduit de Souches in its title, while the second is described as a loop and passes through three named towns. Before setting out, check the current route and local conditions.

Architectural History and Historic Landmarks

A church in Hostim is documented as early as 1394. Another link to the Middle Ages is the ruin of Bukovina Castle above the Nedveka stream. It stands on the site of a stone castle that was the seat of the Lords of Bukovina in the first half of the 14th century. Its location by the stream, its ruins and its former role as a seat of the manor connect local history with the architectural heritage.

The château in Hostim is a freestanding, four-winged masonry building arranged around a trapezoidal courtyard. A moat surrounds the building and the adjoining outbuildings, with a brick bridge crossing it. The château complex can thus be described by its layout and the arrangement of the courtyard, moat and outbuildings.

Another distinctive building type is the 18th-century Baroque granary. It is one of the few surviving multi-storey grain stores and forms a prominent architectural feature on the rise above the village. Its function, date of construction and elevated position make it a distinctive example of local architectural history.

The rectory adds a Neoclassical touch: it is a monumental, two-storey building of art-historical value. The former brewery complex is also part of Hostim’s architectural history. It is completely preserved and is considered an example of rural economic architecture in South Moravia. The Radkovský vodní mlýn, a former watermill, is another reminder of earlier uses: part of its millrace survives, and the mill is one of the few surviving complexes built along watercourses in the open countryside.

Sacred Architecture in the Town and Surrounding Area

In 1809, Countess Eleonora de Meraviglia had the Chapel of sv. Kříže built in the cemetery. The owner of the local estate is also buried there. The chapel is a valuable example of late Baroque funerary architecture with Neoclassical details and is a prominent feature of the important historic cemetery grounds.

In the area around Hostim, a group of five wayside shrines is a valuable example of small-scale folk religious architecture. A different form is represented by the statue of sv. Jana Nepomuckého on the village square: it is a high-quality, small-scale High Baroque religious sculpture with a pedestal. Together with the cemetery chapel, these buildings illustrate different forms of sacred art—from the cemetery ensemble to a wayside shrine in the surrounding area and a sculpture on the village square.
