The Dyje River flows through the municipality of Dyje and provides the place with a clear landscape focal point. Its character also includes the Dyjské svahy natural monument, a cycling tour that crosses the river, and evidence of religious and Baroque architecture. In Dyje, a protected riverside landscape and buildings from different historical periods thus come together. When planning your trip, you can choose between the natural features of the hillside, the cycling tour, and the cultural and historical attractions.

River Landscape and Dyjské svahy

The Dyjské svahy natural monument is located in the municipality and cadastral area of Dyje. It lies on a rocky, west-facing slope above the river, south of the municipality of the same name in the direction of Tasovice. It protects plant communities adapted to dry, warm conditions, along with numerous rare and endangered plant and animal species. The natural feature is therefore specifically tied to a particular slope and the communities protected there—not just to the river as a landmark of the place.

A cycling tour passes through Dyje, crosses the river there, and continues along the opposite bank to the Dyjské svahy natural monument. The river crossing is therefore part of the route described. At the natural monument, you can leave your bicycle at a shelter and walk a short distance toward the river. If you choose this tour, you can plan for this section on foot as well as the cycling route.

Wayside Shrine, Church, and Chateau

The Boží muka wayside shrine, also known as the Holy Image Column, stands in fields north of Dyje on a former road to Dobšice. It is an early Baroque pillar shrine dating from around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its square base supports a pillar with a cornice; above it sits a chapel decorated with shallow reliefs and topped by a concave tent roof. The sequence of base, pillar, chapel, and roof makes the shrine’s structure clear and goes beyond simply identifying its style.

The Late Baroque Church of St. John of Nepomuk is an important pilgrimage site. Together with the early Baroque shrine, it illustrates different building periods and religious functions. The Baroque Chateau Dyje is also part of the area’s architectural history: it was built by the Premonstratensians of Louka from 1768 to 1775. The chateau thus adds another historic building to the picture of the area’s religious architecture.

Route History and Getting There

When planning your routes, distinguish the Svatoklementská Trail from the cycling tour described to the natural monument. The former route ran between Hodonice and Znojmo through Tasovice, Dyje, and Dobšice. Historically, it was suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. It is currently considered unmaintained; many information boards no longer work or are entirely missing. Its suitability in the past is therefore not a current route recommendation. If you want to follow the route, check the current signage and trail conditions in advance.

Dyje stop is on the Znojmo–Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou–Břeclav railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable for your intended travel date.
