Chvalatice lies on a rise above the Dyje. Below the village, the river winds through a deep, wooded valley; forests and hills surround the municipality. This setting shapes the character of a stay: The area is especially suited to hiking and cycling, while the church, memorial, hunting lodge ruins and hillfort site reveal different aspects of the village’s history. Chvalatická zátoka on the Vranov Reservoir also offers swimming as a distinct attraction.
The Dyje Landscape, Trails and Water
The RĹŻĹľovĂ˝ vrch nature reserve lies within the cadastral area of Chvalatice, about one kilometre south of the village, on rocky slopes above the Vranov Reservoir. Protected nature and the reservoir landscape meet here. Access conditions may change; check the current conditions before visiting RĹŻĹľovĂ˝ vrch.
The area around Chvalatice is especially suited to hiking and cycling; numerous marked hiking and cycling trails run through the cadastral area. If you plan your trip around activities, you can focus on hiking days and cycling trips, or include both in your stay. These two options give your nature itinerary a clear direction without requiring you to choose just one activity.
Swimming in the Vranov Reservoir is possible at Chvalatická zátoka. This adds a water-based activity to hiking and cycling. Local water conditions can vary, so take them into account when planning to swim.
Architectural History and Older Traces
The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross is a single-nave Late Baroque building and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Single-nave means that the church has one main nave. There is also a memorial to the victims of the First World War beside it. Two cultural perspectives thus come together in one place: the church’s architecture and remembrance of the victims of war.
The ruins of the hunting lodge in Chvalatice are also part of the village’s history. The small circular building originally served the Lords of BĂtov as a hunting lodge and resting place during hunts in the surrounding forests in the 19th century. Its small round form and former use for hunting provide a different historical emphasis from the church’s sacred architecture: here, the focus is on the Lords of BĂtov’s use of the forests.
An older chapter is connected with Chvalatické hradiště. The surviving, freely accessible prehistoric and Slavic hillfort site lies south of Chvalatice on a narrow rocky promontory, with the Dyje flowing around it on three sides. Unlike the church and hunting lodge ruins, the focus here is on a site rather than a single building. Its position by the river is as much a part of this destination as the hillfort’s early history.
