The Kuželov windmill is a national cultural monument built in 1842. Its architectural design and preserved original fittings give local history a tangible focus. Other highlights include the High Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity, the historic stones known as Tři kameny, and an annual concert at the mill. Trails through the protected landscape area are another possible theme for a trip. Kuželov can thus be explored from several perspectives: building history, historical boundary demarcations, events, and landscape.

Windmill and Building History

The windmill is of the Dutch type: a rotating wooden roof sits atop a solid stone structure. The roof is the movable part, while the stone building forms the fixed base. The original fittings have been preserved and extend over three floors. Both the design and the interior are therefore part of the mill’s historic fabric. The windmill complex also includes a visitor centre housed in a historic barn.

Church, Border History and Concert

The Church of the Holy Trinity adds a High Baroque building dating from 1718 to the area’s architectural history; its tower dates from 1770. Together with the 1842 windmill, these landmarks form a timeline of church construction, the church tower, and the mill. The three stones known as Tři kameny offer a different historical perspective: along a historic road to Hungary, they marked the former boundary between the domains of the Lichtensteins, the Magnis family, and Hungary. The mill and church thus represent building history, while Tři kameny tell the story of a boundary drawn along a road.

Since 1992, the closing concert of Horňácké slavnosti has been held at the windmill every year. The concert connects the mill with a recurring event. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date for the relevant year before making plans.

Landscape and Getting There

Most of the cadastral area of Kuželov lies within the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. A route through this protected area also leads back to the windmill. Kuželov therefore has both a broader landscape context and a specific trail connection to the mill.

From Velká nad Veličkou, you can walk about four kilometres along the green-marked trail to the windmill or take the bus to Kuželov. The options differ in mode of transport and destination: the walking route leads to the windmill, while the bus goes to Kuželov. The distance is approximate and offers a guide when choosing between the two travel options.

Plan Your Stay

When looking for a hotel for your trip to Kuželov, the reason for your visit may influence your travel dates. If you would like to attend the closing concert, check its date for the relevant year before booking. If your main interest is building history or the historic boundary, you can plan your trip independently of the concert date. This way, you can tailor your accommodation search to the actual purpose of your trip.
