If you would like to combine rural architecture with outdoor activities, Hrubá Vrbka offers several points of interest: preserved farm buildings, a Protestant prayer house, a museum, and cycling and hiking trails.
Barns, Chambers and Prayer House
Folk farm buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in Hrubá Vrbka. Several chambers stand in the village square; outside the village, long rows of stone and clay-brick barns stand on both sides. One specific example is the listed stone chamber at house no. 87: it is built entirely of stone and served as a storeroom. The Protestant prayer house dates from 1782. Its unusual interior has two facing galleries. A gallery is a raised walkway inside a building. The chambers in the village square and the barns outside the village are structures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Clay bricks are building blocks made from shaped clay. An area in Hrubá Vrbka has also been designated a heritage zone. When looking at the buildings, you can pay particular attention to stone and clay brick as materials used in the barns.
Museum and Local Traditions
The Vrbecké Museum is located in a former Jewish farmstead. The museum displays collections of objects from traditional folk culture, as well as a furnished farmhouse from Slovácko. Another exhibition is devoted to the legacy of Saint Martyr Gorazd II. A monastery in Hrubá Vrbka was founded in 1992. The furnished farmhouse presents traditional rural domestic life as a complete interior: unlike individual collection items, it conveys the furnishings of a house from Slovácko. If you are particularly interested in everyday rural culture, this part of the museum is a natural focus. The exhibition on the legacy of Saint Martyr Gorazd II turns to another cultural and historical subject, one that includes religious history.
The Fašank carnival tradition in Hrubá Vrbka has also continued without interruption. The date and format of the annual celebrations may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the date and the specific format of the celebration.
