A 31-kilometre wine trail, wine cellar lanes and historic buildings offer several ways to explore Hovorany during a stay. Visitors looking to combine wine and culture can choose from routes, events and sights. The routes vary considerably in length: the wine trail is well suited to a cycling trip, while a five-kilometre circular route around Hovorany can be done on foot or by bike.

Wine Routes and Wine Cellars in Hovorany

The wine trail through the municipalities of Slovácko is 31 kilometres long and easily cycled. Hovorany is one of four possible starting municipalities, so you can begin the route here. A shorter option is the five-kilometre circular route, “Hovoranskými vinohrady za vínem”, around Hovorany. It is part of a recurring event and is suitable for walkers and cycling tourists. Check the route and programme for the relevant edition.

At least 20 wineries take part along the “Hovoranskými vinohrady za vínem” route, offering a selection of their own wines. The participating wineries vary with each edition. The circular route and the 31-kilometre wine trail therefore offer different scales: a shorter loop around the village or a longer route through several municipalities that is easily cycled.

At Na Benátkách, a wine cellar lane lies directly beside the Hovoranský rybník. From a viewpoint, you can see the picturesque wine cellars reflected on the surface of the local pond. The local cellars in the lane offer wine tastings and seating. The wine cellar of Vinařství Machalínek is in the Hluboká cesta cellar area in Hovorany. If you would like to visit, arrange the details before travelling.

Wine Events

The traditional wine event “Den otevřených sklepů” offers the chance to visit up to 25 wineries and sample a total of more than 300 wines. The number of participating wineries and the scope of the offerings vary from year to year. The programme includes guided winery tours with explanations, singing groups, performances by winemakers’ children and evening entertainment.

Music also features in the programme for “Hovoranskými vinohrady za vínem”, including male choirs and an evening with the Rubáš cimbalom band from Buchlovice. The event programme may change from one edition to the next. Check the dates and programme details for your chosen year before travelling.

Church, Museum and Local History

The Church of St John the Baptist is a single-nave Baroque building with a striking prismatic tower on its west façade. Its history goes back to an early Baroque chapel built in 1670, which was extended between 1721 and 1725. Its architecture and origins can be seen together in this building: the older chapel was its starting point, the extension shaped the church, which is now described as a Baroque building.

The Hovorany Museum is housed in a listed building with typical folk architecture and a painted façade. Its historical artefacts cover domestic life, agriculture, mining, viticulture and local crafts. There is also an exhibition about Václav Adolf Kovanič, a local artist, academic sculptor and medallist. The collection thus brings everyday and working life together with the work of an individual artist.

Other historic buildings add to this picture of Hovorany: the Church of the Redeemer of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church dates from 1957, and the painted Chapel of St Roch dates from 1834. Together with the older church and the museum, they give the village several distinct historical points of interest, without requiring a particular sightseeing route.

Hovoranské louky Nearby

About 1.5 kilometres northwest of Hovorany, towards Karlín, the Hovoranské louky protected area lies nearby. It is part of the European Natura 2000 network and protects steppe and dry grassland communities with rare, endangered and protected plant species. So, alongside wine routes and architectural history, the surrounding area also offers a connection with nature. The protected area is best considered a nearby destination for an excursion, rather than one of the sights within the village itself.
