Zastávka gives its mining history plenty of room while also offering a variety of ways to get around: a permanent exhibition, a seasonal narrow-gauge railway, a cycling loop, and walking trails. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus more on the town’s history or on spending time outdoors.

Mining History and Festival Tradition

The Důl Julius mine had its own coal-washing plant, briquette factory, steam winding engine, and cableway. The industrial complex of the Důl Herring mine included coke ovens, a brickworks, and the production of decorative moulded bricks. These examples illustrate different aspects of local industrial history, from coal processing to other branches of production.

The building that now houses the Chapel of St. John the Baptist also served several purposes. After first being a residence, it became a guild room after 1850, where miners gathered before descending into Důl Julius; later, it served as a shop. In 1911, it was converted into a chapel and consecrated. The Hornické slavnosti also commemorate the mining past: they are held every year on September 9 for Miners’ Day. The programme may vary from year to year.

Exhibition and Getting Your Bearings in Town

The Zastávka Regional Information Centre is right next to the railway station building. Its rooms house a permanent exhibition documenting the development of hard-coal mining and the history of local industrial businesses, schools, sports clubs, and theatre groups. The exhibition thus looks beyond the mines to include other aspects of local cultural and community life.

Admission to the permanent exhibition on mining history is free. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit. The information centre also houses the Permoníček mini playroom, where children can play with games and toys while you spend time in the café. Availability of this facility may change.

Narrow-Gauge Railway, Cycling Loop, and Walking Trails

Zastávka has a second railway station for the narrow-gauge railway operated by the Museum of Industrial Railways. From there, small railcars take you to Zbýšov. The museum offers train rides between Zbýšov-Důl Jindřich and Zastávka u Brna in both directions. The service is seasonal and depends on scheduled operating dates; check the timetable for your chosen date.

The 35-kilometre Kolem Bobravy a Bučína cycling loop, using routes 5171 and 5172, starts and ends in Zastávka. If you prefer walking, you can take a trail along a forest track beside the narrow-gauge railway to the former Důl Ferdinand mine site. Route details and trail conditions may change; check both before setting out.

The forest park offers another option: a quiet place for a walk or a rest. Benches are also available there. It provides a quieter alternative to the cycling tour and the walk along the railway.
