Cvrčovice combines a distinctive architectural history with the river landscape of the Jihlava. This gives you two different focal points for planning your trip: churches and monuments whose dates are well documented, and the landscape and events by the water. There is also a seasonal campsite right by the river.
Church and Baroque Monuments
The Church of St. James dates from around 1690 and is designated a cultural monument. A tower was added in 1828. In the 19th century, a Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre was built on the south side of the chancel, and an oratory was erected above it in 1885. These dates distinguish several phases of construction, rather than classifying the church solely by its original construction date.
The architectural heritage also includes the Cvrčovice chateau and farmstead, which is designated an immovable cultural monument. The listed complex includes a gate, a farm building, and an administrative building. The so-called Petersova vila dates from the second half of the 18th century and is listed as a chateau under registration number 1186. Today, it houses the Střední odborné učiliště Cvrčovice vocational school centre.
Two Baroque statues also have their own historical dates: a statue of St. Urban from 1750 stands in front of the cemetery gate; the statue of St. John of Nepomuk in Cvrčovice dates from 1734. There is a sixteen-year gap between their dates of creation. Together with the older church, they provide a timeline of different parts of the local cultural heritage.
The Jihlava River and the Nature Park
The Jihlava flows through the municipality; a weir is located at river kilometre 18.4. A Bailey bridge built in 1946 crosses the river at Cvrčovice. The Niva Jihlavy Nature Park is also located within the municipality. Its landscape is shaped by the freely meandering Jihlava floodplain, fragments of floodplain forest, extensive riverside vegetation, and two systems of former river channels or oxbow lakes.
This landscape is the only surviving area of its kind in the Brno-venkov District. In the South Moravian Region, it is one of three longer surviving stretches of lowland rivers. The marked Vinařská stezka Brněnská – Trasa Uherčice–Těšany cycle route also passes through Cvrčovice.
Events and Accommodation
The Odborné učiliště Cvrčovice vocational school centre holds a Christmas market every year. Visitors can view and buy students’ handicrafts there. The sitontop Cup is also open to the public: the competition’s third round is currently held in Cvrčovice every year. The Cvrčovický džbánek has been held since 2000 as a race for two-person teams in a rowing boat and is also open to the general public.
The Cvrčovická neckyáda is associated with the Cvrčovická lávka and includes raft races. These events take several different forms: a market featuring students’ work, water sports competitions, and an event with raft races.
The riverside campsite offers seasonal pitches for tents and caravans right beside the Jihlava, with a view of the Cvrčovický weir. If you are considering this accommodation option, check before travelling that the seasonal operating period matches your planned dates.
