In Klobouky U Brna, architectural history, religious tradition and gently rolling countryside come together. The castle, churches and windmill reflect different centuries and purposes. At the same time, vineyards, fields and extensive forests shape the surroundings in the valley of the Kloboucký potok. You can therefore focus your stay on historic buildings, the countryside or the region’s cycling connections.
Castle, Churches and Historic Routes
The Renaissance castle was built in 1589 as a summer residence for the superiors of the Premonstratensian monastery in Zábrdovice. Its original purpose offers a glimpse into the history of the monastery and its leadership. The historic Česká cesta is also part of the town’s history: it ran directly through Klobouky U Brna and, in the lower part of the market square, alongside the castle complex and its service buildings. At this historic point, architectural history and the route of an old road come together.
At the Kostel sv. Vavřince, one specific construction phase takes centre stage: on 31 March 1655, the extension began under P. Hugo Colin. The church is dedicated to Saint Lawrence, a Roman deacon and martyr, and was added to the state list of cultural monuments in 1964. Its construction phase, religious dedication and listing as a monument offer different points of reference for understanding the church’s history.
The Chapel of St Barbara also brings together architecture and religious history. In 1669, the Zábrdovice monastery had it built on the hill above the Catholic church. Its 1709 frescoes depict the life of the patron saint. Every year, on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, a pilgrimage takes place at the chapel; this tradition dates back to the Baroque period. Visitors interested in sacred art will find not only the year it was built but also its subject matter and a tradition that continues to return each year.
The Windmill and Visiting Hours
The Větrný mlýn windmill introduces a different aspect of history. The present-day mill was reconstructed between 1983 and 1985 on the original site of the 1748 windmill. It has a complete interior and is fully functional. The original site and the later reconstruction are thus clearly linked in time; the technical structure also differs from the town’s religious and monastic landmarks.
There are specific visiting hours to keep in mind: visits are possible from 1 May to 30 September; from Monday to Friday and outside this period, visits are possible by prior arrangement. Before you travel, check which visiting option suits your dates.
Countryside, Cycling and Accommodation
Klobouky U Brna lies in the valley of the Kloboucký potok, amid gently rolling countryside with vineyards, fields and extensive forests. Cycling can also be part of your plans: the Moravská vinná stezka runs through the town and its surroundings. The historic perspective in the town centre is thus complemented by opportunities to enjoy the countryside and explore by bike.
When choosing a hotel, you can start by asking what you want to focus on during your stay: the windmill and architectural history, sacred art and traditions, or the countryside and the Moravská vinná stezka.
