Nikolčice combines a basin landscape open to the north with a variety of church building histories and recurring local customs. This offers two perspectives for planning your trip: you can focus on the landscape and architectural history, or make an event date the occasion for your stay.
Basin Landscape on the Edge of Ždánický les
Nikolčice lies in a basin of the Nikolčický potok that opens to the north. The stream rises south of the village, above it, and flows into the Cézava near Židlochovice. This makes it possible to understand the landscape along a specific course: from its source south of the village, above it, through the open basin to its mouth. On the edge of Ždánický les, the varied landscape is rich in rare steppe and forest flora. The stream and basin describe the area’s physical shape; the flora adds a botanical profile. Those exploring the natural features can distinguish between the landform and the rare steppe and forest plants.
Churches and Historical Memorials
The parish church of sv. Jakuba Staršího was built in 1777 on the site of an older, dilapidated church. The Evangelical church in Nikolčice was built in 1862 and redesigned in a modern style in 1952. Their histories therefore differ in more than just their dates: at sv. Jakuba, a new building replaced a dilapidated predecessor; the Evangelical church was later redesigned. The comparison shows two different forms of change—the replacement of an older church building and the alteration of an existing building.
The stone reconciliation cross U Josífka, also known as Nikolčický kříž, commemorates an event from 1663 during the Turkish incursions into Moravia. It adds a single historical episode to the churches’ building histories: here, the focus is not the development of a building, but the memory of a specific event.
Pilgrimage, Wine Exhibition and Jakubské hody
Local customs vary in occasion and form. During Ostatky, a wine exhibition with tastings is held annually, organized jointly with the Nikolčice Small Gardeners’ Association. The parish church of sv. Jakuba Staršího holds a pilgrimage on 25 July. The Jakubské hody take place at the end of July and include the raising of a maypole. Music and singing fill the village during the hody, as participants in Nikolčice festive dress dance beneath the maypole. The maypole links two parts of the festival: it is raised and also serves as the focal point of the dancing.
The two July dates are easy to distinguish when planning your visit: the pilgrimage is associated with 25 July, while the hody take place at the end of the month. The exact annual programme may vary, so check the specific dates and programme details before travelling.
Sporting Focus: Nikolčické hry
The Nikolčické hry have a different focus. They are a traditional school sports event involving three to five Czech and Slovak schools. The games last two days and include football, handball and athletics competitions. Unlike the pilgrimage and the folk hody, they focus on school competition and several sports. The exact annual programme of the games may also vary.
