Štěchovice combines a layered architectural history with the Easter tradition of Hrkání and landscapes around the village. At Zámeček, Renaissance origins were followed by Baroque alterations and a Neoclassical transformation that shaped its present appearance. The Easter tradition continues through Good Friday; three ponds lie about one kilometre to the east. Culture, customs and landscape therefore offer distinct points of interest when planning a stay.
Architectural history across several eras
Zámeček stands in the northeastern part of Štěchovice. It is a single-storey, three-winged building with Renaissance origins. Later alterations were made in the Baroque period; its present appearance resulted from a Neoclassical transformation. Its origins and present-day form should be distinguished: the Renaissance marks its beginnings, while Neoclassicism represents its later form.
The Špejchar, also known as Špýchar, is near the farmstead, dates from the 18th century and is a protected monument. It served as a contribution granary. The two buildings therefore offer different historical perspectives: at Zámeček, the changes to its architectural form are the main focus, while at the Špejchar, it is its former use as a granary.
Chapel and Easter tradition
The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, dating from 1861, is located on the Strakonice–Volenice road. It is also part of the village’s Easter tradition: Hrkání is observed in Štěchovice at Easter. Until Good Friday, children walk through the village four times a day. On Good Friday, everyone meets at the Chapel of St John by the fire and burns an effigy of Judas stuffed with straw. The processions are not limited to Good Friday; they continue until that day.
Ponds, cycling routes and sports field
Štěchovice has three ponds, located about one kilometre east of the village. Recommended cycling routes follow minor roads and local traffic routes; some sections also run along field and forest tracks. Some local roads may be in poor condition. You should therefore consider both the type of route and the condition of the roads when choosing a cycling route.
Štěchovice has a sports field where nohejbal tournaments are held. There is also a table tennis table and a rest pavilion at the sports field.
A nearby historical landmark
Another historical landmark near Štěchovice is the Krčohrad castle site. It is the remains of a castle dating from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. This dating refers to a period at the transition between two centuries, unlike the exact construction year of 1861. The castle site thus adds a castle-related element to the local history, while the chapel is associated with a specific date and Zámeček with several phases of construction.
When planning, the points of interest differ in terms of timing, location and route type: Hrkání takes place at Easter, the ponds lie about one kilometre east of the village, and the cycling routes include both minor roads and field and forest tracks.
