The first written mention of Pohorovice dates from 1227, during the reign of King Přemysl Otakar I. Kloub offers a specific point of reference for local history: the village, which has medieval origins, is a village conservation area within the municipality of Pohorovice. It was designated a conservation area in 1995. This allows two distinct historical points of reference to be distinguished: Pohorovice’s early written mention and Kloub’s later designation as a conservation area.
Kloub: Village Square and Centre
Kloub’s historic centre is a small, regularly square village square. A small chapel stands in its centre. The shape of the square describes the overall settlement layout, while the chapel marks a single building in a central location. If you are interested in historic village structures, in Kloub you can look at both the layout of the village centre and this central building.
Chapel and Rural Building Culture
The Chapel of P. Marie has a square ground plan and a straight-ended apse. The year 1818 is inscribed on the gable. This identifies both its basic form and a dated architectural detail. Rural architecture is also represented in Kloub: several valuable brick farmsteads have been preserved. Most date from the 1840s and 1850s and show features of Rural Baroque. The decades place the farmsteads in time, while Rural Baroque describes their architectural character.
The rural farmstead at No. 3 in Kloub is listed as an immovable cultural monument. The preserved farmsteads also form part of the broader folk architecture tradition of southern Písecko and Vodňany. This makes it possible to view local building culture in a wider regional context: the farmsteads are part of Kloub’s history and, at the same time, belong to a broader architectural tradition.
Trade History and Further Perspectives
The historic trade route Zlatá stezka adds an economic perspective to the history of buildings. It brought considerable benefits and prosperity to the communities. While the farmsteads are considered in terms of materials, form and period of construction, the route brings trade and its importance to the communities into focus. Village history can therefore be explored through both preserved building forms and the economic role of a historic trade route.
There are signposted cycle paths in the Pohorovice area. Signage and route conditions may change, so check the current directions before setting out. There is also a viewpoint in the cadastral area of Pohorovice. These features appeal to different interests: the cycle paths offer an active pursuit, while the viewpoint adds a landscape perspective to exploring the area. You can weigh up whether to focus your trip planning on building culture and village history or instead on cycling and the landscape.
Pohorovice as a Place to Stay
The surrounding towns are easily accessible from Pohorovice all year round. This adds a practical consideration when choosing a location to the cultural themes. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Pohorovice, you can first consider what matters to you during your stay: Kloub’s history and rural architecture, the signposted cycle paths, or the year-round accessibility of the surrounding towns. These priorities offer different starting points for your planning, without implying a set itinerary.
