Němětice combines its location in the Volyňka Valley with a wealth of evidence of rural architecture and early settlement. The village lies in the foothills of the Šumava, at the foot of the Bohemian Forest. These themes may shape your choice of holiday apartment: the landscape and river on the one hand, and architectural styles and history on the other. You can therefore base your choice of location on whether natural surroundings, architecture or traces of the past are most important to you.

Landscape, Hiking Route and River

A wooded ridge with the peaks of Kráva (622 m) and Ostrý vrch (591 m) forms part of the southern side of the Peklov Valley. In addition to its location in the Volyňka Valley, the Peklov Valley is a specific reference point for finding your way around the landscape. The named peaks and their elevations give the ridge additional definition.

The Zlatá stezka route runs through Radošovice and Němětice to Volyně. For hikers, this route places the village on a named regional trail. Cold-water swimmers can bathe in the Volyňka. There is also a historical cycling connection linked to a specific year: in 2006, a section of a cycle path along the Volyňka and through the holiday-home area in Němětice was funded.

Folk Architecture and Chapels

On the northern edge of the village, the Baroque farmstead No. 29 stands on the road between the village green and the main road. The protected area includes the farmhouse, stables, a barn, a masonry gate and the enclosed plots. The farmstead is among the finest examples of folk architecture in the Volyně area. The protected area thus includes several buildings and plots, not just the farmhouse.

Individual houses also display a variety of architectural details. House No. 8 on the road still has a timbered room and a gable clad in boards. House No. 2 is simple and has a triangular gable. The chapel on the village green has a simple wing-shaped gable and a bell in the ridge of its roof. The Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a masonry building with a rectangular ground plan and a three-sided apse, in the style of Rural Baroque. Each of these examples highlights different features: an interior room and gable, a ground plan and apse, or the design of a chapel.

Local History and Early Settlement

Queen Eliška Přemyslovna founded Němětice in 1315 on royal land, together with several other villages in the area. Hradec-Hradiště near Němětice occupies a spur above the Volyňka and was settled during the Iron Age and the hillfort period. Both of these periods date back far earlier than the medieval foundation.

Hradec occupies a spur south of the Peklov stream, about 600 metres southeast of the chapel in the village. Together with the information about the settlement periods, this location offers another perspective on the history of Němětice: the landscape and settlement are among the village’s defining themes.
