Castle history and recurring events give you two concrete starting points for planning your trip to Lažany. When choosing the purpose of your visit, consider whether you are mainly interested in the castle complex or would prefer to plan your trip around an event. Each approach offers a different perspective on the town: one follows its historical development, the other the calendar of the year.

Castle Park and Building History

The castle park is part of the Lažany castle complex and covers an estimated 2.5 hectares. Its present design follows the English landscape romanticism of the period after the mid-19th century. The park’s current design belongs to a later phase than the fortress’s conversion at the end of the 16th century and the addition of a wing in 1760.

The Lažany fortress was converted into a castle at the end of the 16th century; a second Baroque wing was added in 1760. The castle’s development and the park’s design can therefore be viewed as successive, but distinct, phases. A castle wing is one section of a castle complex; “Baroque” describes the style of the structure added in 1760.

Lažany was first mentioned in 1384; at that time, the town belonged to Ježek of Lažany. This local history begins earlier than the building and landscape changes mentioned above. To understand the town’s cultural history, you can consider the first mention, the fortress’s conversion, the 1760 extension and the later park design as a chronological sequence.

Events Throughout the Year

The event calendar offers several different planning dates. On April 30, the Burning of the Witches (pálení čarodějnic) is one of the regular annual events. In June, a Nohejbal tournament is among the regular events. The most important event in Lažany is the Pouťový turnaj, a small-sided football tournament: it takes place on the first weekend of the school holidays and is played for the mayor’s challenge cup. A sports field was built in Lažany for small-sided football, Nohejbal and tennis.

The dates offer different planning options: a specific calendar day, a month or a weekend during the holidays. If a festival is the deciding factor for your trip, check its date before you leave. There are also events with competitions during the summer holidays, organized jointly with holiday-home owners. Check the current program for these events before your trip.

Town Layout and Getting Around

Lažany consists of the houses by the castle on the access road from Strakonice and the Sázky district, about 250 meters away. South of Lažany, road bridge No. 1731-12 crosses the dam that divides Kořenský Pond, in the direction of Doubravice.
