Mečichov combines a distinctive village centre with a varied landscape of forests, ponds, fields and meadows. The large circular village square and the chapels shape the cultural side of the village; two ecological biocentres and numbered cycle routes add nature and route-related features.
Village Square and Chapels
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary and Saint Adalbert stands in the middle of a large, circular village square. Original farmsteads, mostly agricultural, line the square and shape its surroundings. The village’s appearance is therefore defined not only by a single building, but also by the shape of the square and the layout of the farmsteads. The Chapel of Saint Adalbert is listed as an immovable cultural monument; the village square is designated a cultural asset. These two classifications apply to different elements: the building at the centre and the square itself. Travellers interested in architecture and settlement patterns can therefore view the village centre as a combination of a chapel, a circular layout and farmsteads shaped by agriculture.
A second chapel, the niche chapel near Mečichov, lies less than a kilometre from the village on the road to Horažďovice. It was built in 1911 and restored in 2005. Its location differs clearly from that of the chapel in the village square: rather than being in the centre, it stands near the village on the road to Horažďovice. The two buildings can thus be distinguished by their respective settings; the niche chapel’s history also includes its year of construction and restoration.
Landscape and Biocentres
The general description of the landscape around Mečichov mentions forests, ponds, fields and meadows. The two ecological biocentres offer more specific features. The Bílý Kámen Biocentre covers 46.4 hectares in the Mečichov cadastral area. It includes ponds and the surrounding wet and dry meadows. The area figure indicates the extent of this biocentre, while the ponds and meadow types mentioned also give a concrete impression of its landscape features.
The Nad Mečichovem ecological biocentre comprises a rocky hilltop area with a remnant of woodland that is predominantly forested. By comparison, ponds and wet and dry meadows are the main features of Bílý Kámen, while Nad Mečichovem is characterised by hilltops and woodland. Those comparing landscape features when planning a trip will therefore find different focal points: water and meadows on the one hand, rocky terrain and a wooded remnant on the other.
Cycle Routes and Bus Connections
Two numbered routes are described for getting around by bicycle. Cycle Route 1064 runs from Kadov via Čečelovice to Mečichov. Cycle Route 312 continues from Mečichov to Bratronice, Jindřichovice and Blatná. Taken together, the routes place Mečichov in different roles: as the destination of Route 1064 and as the starting point of the stated continuation along Route 312. Their numbers and the sequence of places help distinguish the two routes and incorporate the named places into your own plans.
There are also bus connections from Mečichov to Strakonice, Blatná and Horažďovice. Blatná is therefore listed both as a bus destination and at the end of the described Cycle Route 312. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable in advance and arrange your day around the actual service.
