Blatná combines castle history and urban architecture with a large park that is open to the public year-round. Blatná Castle is one of the best-preserved water-surrounded aristocratic residences in the Czech Republic. In the town center, you’ll also find the Late Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, museums, and other historic buildings. You can plan your trip around different interests: the park, architectural history, or exhibitions about the town and the Blatensko region.

Castle Park, Paths, and Alpacas

The castle park covers 42 hectares. Its landscape includes streams, bridges, paths, and tree-lined avenues. Fallow deer graze freely there, and there is also a group of peacocks. The park is open to the public year-round. If you’d like to plan other experiences around the castle, you can also book meet-and-greets and walks with alpacas.

The “Blatenské královny – růžová stezka” (Queens of Blatná – Rose Trail) offers a direct connection between the park and the town’s architecture: it leads through the castle park to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This lets you experience the park and the church as two distinct parts of a single walk.

Late Gothic Architecture and Historic Buildings

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Blatná is among the outstanding examples of Late Gothic architecture in South Bohemia and the wider Danube region. The cemetery chapel of St. Michael, consecrated in 1515, stands beside the church. The bell tower, redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style, originally served as the entrance to the former cemetery—a detail that connects its present-day appearance with the site’s former use.

Another of the town’s landmarks is the Marian Column, known as the Mariánský sloup. It stands in the middle of Míru Square, within the urban conservation area. The column depicts St. Wenceslas, St. John of Nepomuk, St. Dominic, and St. Joseph, as well as the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus. It offers a different perspective on religious art from that of the church and its chapel architecture.

Museums and Local History

The “Muzeum Všemi smysly” (Museum Through All the Senses) explores the history of Blatensko through touch, hearing, and smell. Its five rooms take visitors back to the Iron Age. The Blatná Town Museum, by contrast, is located in the historic town center near the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The two museums therefore offer different perspectives: one focuses on the region’s history and sensory interpretation, while the other is situated in the town’s historic center.

Evidence of architectural history can also be found beyond the town center. The Kontribuční sýpka is a three-storey grain store dating from the first half of the 19th century, on the edge of Blatná in the direction of Buzice. Its historic roof trusses and timber ceilings have been preserved. You may also be interested in Jan Böhm’s contribution to the town’s history: on plantations covering more than 30 hectares, he bred over 100 new varieties of different species, colors, and fragrances.

More Things to Do During Your Stay

School pupils and university students can take an educational walk with a museum historian. They’ll learn about notable buildings in the town, including the church, tower, town hall, schools, and Sokolovna, as well as important local figures. This experience combines a guided walk with the town’s history, while the “Blatenské královny – růžová stezka” route focuses on the park and church.

If you’d like to combine your visit to Blatná with a bike ride, you can follow cycling circuit No. 1. It starts in Blatná, passes through Čekanice, Sedlice, Lom, and Škvořetice, and returns to Blatná. When looking for hotels in Blatná, it’s worth first deciding what you want to do: will your trip focus mainly on the castle park and historic buildings, will you include museums and local history, or would you also like to plan a bike ride? That way, you can choose accommodation to suit the interests you want to pursue during your stay.
