Below Strašice, the Novosedelský potok flows, also known as the Kolčava. Near the former mills and at the Kolčava site, the same watercourse serves as a point of reference for local history and recreation. When looking for a holiday rental, you might first consider whether to focus your stay mainly on chapels and monuments, the Kolčava or cycling.
Chapels and local history
On the village square, the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows stands among mature lime trees. Its bell rings at noon and in the evening. A monument to those who fell in the First World War also stands on the square. On the bridge over the Kolčava, a chapel houses a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk; a regional description from 2025 mentions its upkeep.
Beyond the individual monuments, several houses in Strašice have been preserved in the rural vernacular architecture of the 19th century. Residential buildings are therefore also part of the historic village landscape. The various structures create different focal points: the chapel and war memorial stand together on the village square, while the bridge chapel with its statue is located by the Kolčava.
The Kolčava and its former mills
The former mills on the Kolčava have not operated for several decades. They have been converted for recreational use, so their former purpose remains part of the local history. Near Strašice, a campsite with a swimming pool was established in a beautiful natural setting by the Kolčava. At the Kolčava site, the 2025 regional calendar lists the Na Šumavě pub as a place to get refreshments. Check whether it is open before visiting.
A motorcycle rally is held every July on the grounds of the Kolčava swimming pool and campsite. The 2025 regional calendar lists this annual event; check the current dates before including it in your travel plans. Mushroom picking is also possible in Strašice, but it is seasonal.
Monuments and local traditions
The Boží muka (wayside shrine) dates back to 1676 and was restored in 2024 using an image by an unknown painter that had been preserved. It now stands in a slightly different location: the original field monument was demolished permanently in the 1950s to widen an intersection. Another commemorative tree is the Strašická lípa, near a forester’s lodge below the forest on the southern slope of Bloudím Mountain.
The chapels in Škůdra also have different historical associations. The chapel on the village square dates from 1831. An ancient chapel stands on a hill about 300 metres north of the village square. According to legend, it was probably built to commemorate Swedish soldiers who died during the 1645 invasion of the Prácheň region.
Cycle route and getting there
A tourist cycle route runs through Strašice. For planning purposes, its main difference from mushroom picking is that the latter is seasonal. The 2025 regional calendar also lists regular bus services to Strašice. Check the current routes and timetables before travelling.
