A pond with three dams, a monument dating from 1928 and traces of granite quarrying give Horní Němčice several clear themes to explore during a stay. There is also a niche chapel, a metal bell tower and a location on a European watershed. Local history and landscape features come together here. Horní Němčice lies on the main road from Studená via Dačice to Slavonice.

Pond, dams and local legend

Tříhrázný Pond lies about one kilometre southeast of Horní Němčice and has three dams. Its location and this structural feature make it a distinct landscape feature alongside the village’s cultural landmarks. A local legend tells how a water spirit met the devil at what is now Tříhrázný Pond. This is a traditional story about an encounter at this place, not an explanation for how the pond was created. Two different perspectives therefore sit side by side: the actual pond with its dams and the story told about the place.

Monument and local history

Erected in 1928, the monument commemorates the tenth anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia and those who fell in the First World War. A bust of T. G. Masaryk can be seen in its upper section. The dedication links the founding of the state with remembrance of the war dead. The monument still stands in the village; if you plan to visit it, check its condition on site beforehand.

A metal bell tower stands by house No. 5, and a niche chapel is located north of the village. Together with the monument, these features show different aspects of the area’s architectural and commemorative history. The former granite quarrying offers another perspective. Large granite quarries operated on the eastern slope of the Studenský potok in Horní Němčice. The quarry provided local residents with work and a livelihood. As a result, quarrying is part of not only the history of local land use but also the village’s social history.

The landscape in a wider context

A regional description dated 26 July 2022 identifies the ridge between the Studenský potok and Bolíkovský potok in Horní Němčice as the main European watershed between the Danube and Elbe. The ridge thus creates a landscape context that extends beyond individual buildings: the focus is on the two streams and the watershed between the river systems. This adds a geographical perspective to the history of the monuments and the quarry.

Walks and getting there

Horní Němčice is suitable for walks and hikes. When planning, you can therefore weigh up different priorities: local architecture and history, or a stay that leaves you time for walks and hikes. Its location on the main road from Studená via Dačice to Slavonice provides a specific point of reference for getting there. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider whether the cultural and historical features or the opportunity for walks and hikes better suit your travel plans.
