Horní Pěna can be explored through three distinct themes: its location below a large pond, the history of Mlíčník and Na Hrádečku Zoo. The landscape, architectural history and animal experiences each add their own character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay here, you can start by considering which of these themes you would most like to shape your trip.
Pond Landscape and Natural Environment
Pěněnský rybník covers 75 hectares and is also called Dřevo. Horní Pěna lies in a valley below its dam. Dřevo is one of the oldest ponds in the Jindřichův Hradec area. The area figure describes the size of the pond, while its historical status places it in context among the ponds in the area.
The southeastern part of Horní Pěna’s cadastral area lies within Česká Kanada Nature Park. This means the nature park is another aspect of the landscape, alongside the valley setting and the pond. More space to relax has been created on the beach at Dřevo Pond, with extra sand, benches and a table added. In a notice dated 19 August 2026, the municipality reported on these improvements. The information about the beach refers to the shoreline area, whereas the 75 hectares refers to the pond.
Mlíčník and the Church
Mlíčník, also known as Haltýř, is a small structure built above damp ground or a spring. It was used to cool stored food, mainly milk and dairy products. Mlíčník was probably in use as early as the beginning of the 19th century; the municipality had it restored in 2024. The dates refer to different periods: the presumed start of its use and a later building-related measure.
The Church of St Michael and its cemetery form a Gothic parish church dating from the first quarter of the 14th century. Together with Mlíčník, it adds two distinct themes to the local history: sacred architecture and a practical facility for cooling food.
Na Hrádečku Zoo
Na Hrádečku Zoo in Horní Pěna is home to, among others, steppe servals, American pumas, lions and spotted hyenas. Experiences on offer include spending a day as an animal keeper, animal feeding sessions, guided tours with commentary and night visits. The animals and visitor experiences appeal to different interests: while the animals listed shape the zoo’s profile, the activities offer different ways to explore animal care and observation. A day as an animal keeper is different from a guided tour with commentary; feeding sessions and night visits add to the options.
Regional Orientation and Holiday Apartment
Road II/128 runs through Horní Pěna towards Nová Bystřice and continues on to Austria. This provides a useful reference point for getting your bearings in the region. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can also consider whether the pond landscape, zoo experiences or local history should take centre stage during your stay.
