Majdalena combines late Gothic architecture with a river landscape shaped by branching waterways. If you are looking for accommodation in Majdalena, you can plan your stay around two interests: cultural history or activities on the Lužnice. East of the town centre, St. Mary Magdalene Church stands facing the river.

St. Mary Magdalene Church

St. Mary Magdalene Church is a late Gothic single-nave building. The chancel and part of the nave date from 1534. The high altar features a painting of St. Mary Magdalene by the Český Krumlov painter J. Philipot, dating from the mid-19th century. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one main nave; the date 1534 refers to the chancel and part of the nave. The building and the altar painting therefore represent different periods.

The Lužnice, River Branches and Canal Construction

About 3 km beyond Majdalena, the bed of the Lužnice divides into the Stará řeka and the Nová řeka. The Nová řeka is a 13.5 km-long artificial canal with straight sections, built by Jakub Krčín of Jelčany in the 16th century. The Lužnice riverbed is characterised by meanders, numerous oxbow lakes and pools; it provides a habitat for many rare animal and plant species.

On the Water

On the Lužnice, you can travel either along the Stará řeka or the Nová řeka, then continue via the Nežárka to the Lužnice at Veselí nad Lužnicí. Water conditions may vary. Majdalena has a public campsite for canoeists; its operating arrangements may change. Check the campsite’s current information before travelling.

Recreational fishing is possible in the area around Majdalena. The non-trout fishing area 421 041 Lužnice 10 A extends from the weir at the confluence of the Nová řeka and Stará řeka to the weir at Šulcův mlýn in Tušť. Fishing regulations and access conditions may change. For planning purposes, the options differ: the boating route is described as following various waterways and continuing onwards, while the fishing information covers a named area with two specified boundaries.

Natural Area and Cycling Route

The Meandry Lužnice Nature Reserve is one of two nature reserves within the municipal area of Majdalena. The town is located in the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A geological site 1 km north of Majdalena includes a 2.8 km-long meandering stretch of the Lužnice, with floodplain and a network of former river channels. There is no direct path to the site.

The Myslivna Barbora stop is part of the Okolo Třeboně educational cycle route; its theme is the development of settlement. Barbora is about 3 km west of the centre of Majdalena.
